Day 2 of Coterie Retreat 2024 at the Westin Frenchman’s Reef in St Thomas USVI brought even more education, inspiration, and energy!
Wedding and event professionals enjoyed another round of educational sessions during the day, followed by a chic beachside lunch sponsored by Wedding Pro at The Westin’s Palm Court Terrace.
Overlooking the ocean, conversations flowed about panel topics like wedding trends shaping 2025, how to collaborate with destinations across the Caribbean, and problem-solving during the wedding planning process. Afternoon sessions and panelists kept the dialogue flowing on these subjects and more.
In the evening, attendees continued to celebrate 10 years of retreats at our always-anticipated White Party, graciously hosted at Catherineberg Sugar Mill Estate (now the Governor’s mansion), making for exciting networking opportunities.
The legendary Reggae artist Pressure gave a surprise performance that got EVERYONE on the dancefloor. DJ G$Money with Finer Touch kept the vibes going all night long.

A heartfelt message from Mr. Joseph Boschulte, Commissioner of the U.S. Virgin Islands Dept. of Tourism, during a moment of reflection and gratitude in his welcome remarks.
From the breathtaking views of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John to the warmth of its people, it’s clear that the true beauty of the USVI lies in the little moments and the individuals who make every visit unforgettable.
He added, “Outside of our beaches and beautiful views, our people are our biggest asset.”
Speaker #2. Shauna Smith – The Knot Worldwide
Shauna Smith, the Director of B2B Marketing for The Knot Worldwide, graced the Coterie Retreat stage for her second year to highlight the importance of wedding industry professionals leveraging data to navigate industry trends and grow their businesses.
Shauna shared valuable insights on Gen Z, the most culturally diverse generation to date, noting that they are not only more optimistic about marriage but also bringing new perspectives to wedding planning.
With 2 million weddings in 2024 alone (and the same projected for 2025), the wedding industry remains resilient—even amidst inflationary pressures. In fact, 95% of couples are still excited about their weddings, with many adjusting their plans to stay within budget.
She emphasized that vendors should be ready to meet the evolving needs of these couples, particularly when it comes to the growing influence of social media and AI. With Gen Z doubling the use of AI for tasks like writing website copy and thank-you notes, they are simultaneously seeking authentic, transparent, and responsive service.
Trends shaping weddings in 2025:
- Unplugged ceremonies, eco-friendly options, wedding weekends, incorporating culture, and the resurgence of traditional elements like bouquet tosses.
Top tips for marketing to Gen Z:
- Be responsive: Gen Z expects fast replies.
- Prioritize authenticity & transparency: keep it personal and simple.
- Build trust: 2 out of 3 couples say vendors ease their planning nerves.
- Embrace mobile-first, personalized experiences.
- Create multiple touchpoints: optimize social media and website for mobile.
- Understand shopping behaviors: focus on short-form content like review videos.
- Show your philanthropic side: consider donating in the couple’s name.
- Be active on social media: 76% of Gen Z couples follow vendors online.
- Stay data-driven: monitor analytics and adjust frequently.
- Use TikTok for advice-based, fun content.
- Market to parents: 63% of Gen Z weddings are funded by them. Offer FAQs for parents on your website.
- Leave an impact: surprise & delight opportunities to make an impact.
Ultimately, vendors must pay attention to data and understand how Gen Z’s behaviors, from mobile-first experiences to their high expectations for responsiveness, are shaping the future of the wedding industry.

Panel #1. Understanding Hotel Partnerships: Unlocking Value for Your Wedding Business
On our first panel of day 2, Brian Green of By Brian Green guided a thoughtful discussion on navigating the complexities of destination weddings and creating exceptional client experiences by working with hotel partners.
Kevan Stewart, the owner of luxury boutique wedding venue, The Palm Terrace in Montego Bay, Jamaica, elaborated on the importance of fostering a “One Team Mindset” by collaborating closely with planners and providing key contacts for seamless communication.
He added that flexibility is key—negotiate creative opportunities like styled shoots or early access to build stronger relationships. Lastly, stay responsive and adapt to the expectations of today’s clients, especially Gen Z.

While navigating destination events, he stressed sharing details and asking questions to ensure there are no surprises for your clients. Offer unique value-adds like couple’s massages or honeymoon suite upgrades to enhance the experience. Personalization and memorable moments are must-haves for today’s couples.

Panel #3. Contracts, Conflicts, and Chargebacks – Oh My!
In our “Contracts, Conflicts, and Chargebacks—Oh My!” panel, Kawania Wooten of Howerton Wooten Events led panelists Nadia Anderson (CPA, CGMA, CWEP) and Trademark Attorney + Mentor LaConya Murray through an insightful discussion on navigating all the legalities and paperwork of the wedding planning process.
Kawania’s key takeaway: Don’t underestimate the value of open, positive, and strong communication.
