Darrylynn and Thomas’ love story began at the University of Alabama during orientation in which Thomas was an orientation counselor and Darrylynn a transfer student. Not wanting to miss any important information, Darrylynn asked Thomas if she could borrow his highlighter. Unbeknownst to them both, this simple request would positively alter the path of their lives, leading them to join as husband and wife in a beautiful, intimate and glamorous wedding that was “grand,” “elegant,” and “full of love.”

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. Thomas was an orientation counselor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Darylynn was a transfer student learning about the university at orientation. Their friendship started when Darylynn asked Thomas for a highlighter to make note of all of the important information being covered. Their friendship continued to grow and without the other knowing, they both entertained the thought of taking their relationship to the next level. On November 1, 2010, after prayer and much needed communication between the two of them, they decided to take a chance and build upon the friendship they started two years prior.
Darylynn and Thomas were in Vegas with some of their closest friends celebrating a mutual friend’s birthday. Thomas communicated with everybody else on the trip ahead of time to let them know what his plan was. The whole weekend, Darylynn was in the dark and didn’t know what she was in for! The whole weekend, the guys hung with the guys and the girls hung with the girls except for the events on the itinerary. The only time Thomas and Darylynn spent any alone time together was for their anniversary dinner which was at Top of the World atop the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower. Darylynn told her friends she thought Thomas was going to propose during the dinner. Didn’t happen! Ha!
Darylynn went the rest of the weekend thinking “If it didn’t happen during dinner, it’s not going to happen.” The last morning everyone would still be in Vegas together, everyone went to breakfast at Hash House A Go Go in the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino. Everybody was really tired from the night before, but excited about the approaching proposal (except for Darylynn). After ordering drinks, the birthday girl initiated the plan and asked everybody to go around the table and describe their favorite moment from the weekend…of course with Thomas being last. Once it was Thomas’ turn, everybody got their phones out to record. Thomas stood up and walked around the table and said, “This is my favorite moment, because I’m about to ask the love of my life to spend the rest of her life with me.”
Wedding Style: The wedding was intimate, but grand…elegant, but lively. Most of all it was full of love.
Describe your wedding dress: It was a white two piece Berta dress. The dress was form fitting, but classic with laced sleeves and pearl beading. The train was short with just enough length to fit the formality of the event. The dress was topped off with a cathedral styled veil.
What was wedding shopping like for you? Stressful, but fun! I had two different shopping experiences. The first was with my mother and brother along with my future mother and sister in-law in Atlanta. It was slightly overwhelming with so many personalities and opinions, but I thought I picked my dress that day. Then my mom and I went to a local Huntsville dress shop just to look…it was then that I found the one! Who knew…an impromptu trip to a bridal boutique would turn into one of the happiest days of my wedding planning journey.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? We partook in our first communion as a married couple during the ceremony. We also braided a 3 cord rope to signify the relationship we would have as husband and wife, with God being in the center. The food served at the reception was very diverse and showcased a few of our favorite dishes; from seafood to soul food. The music played during the wedding and reception was full of life and love. The live band played a host of classic love songs while the DJ played some of yesterday and today’s best songs to make people get up and dance.
Bridesmaids gifts: Personalized totes, water bottles, wedding day makeup, journals, t-shirts, and flannel shirts
Groomsmen gifts: Calvin Klein Formal Loafers and tuxedo shirts
Favorite item on the menu: Fried green tomatoes and black-eyed peas
First dance song: John Legend – All of me
What was the best memory from your wedding? Thomas: The behind the scenes moments with the wedding party were my favorite; from toasts in the dressing room to alone time with my new wife. Darylynn: My favorite memories were the first dance and finally being announced as Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sargent
What wedding advice to you have for engaged couples? God has to be at the center of the relationship. HE is the foundation. Also a wedding and a marriage are two different things. Focus on the marriage and don’t get too stressed out about wedding details.
