Designer Spotlight: Lisa Folawiyo of Jewel by Lisa

Since 2005, Lisa Folawiyo, founder of Jewel by Lisa, has been crafting the most uber-chic collections and incorporating Ankara in the most non-traditional yet super couture ways.  She uses the highest grade Ankara fabrics from the Vlisco-Hollandais brand to concoct the perfect mixtures of ankara, sequins, swarovski crystals, beads, taffeta, and anything else you wouldn’t think of coupling with this staple Nigerian fabric.  The result is unprecedented style, glamorizing what we all now refer to as “African Fashion.”  In our interview with the brainchild behind Jewel by Lisa, you’ll get to know some pretty cool things about her.  As an added bonus, check out her newest collection which was shown during ARISE Magazine’s Made in Africa presentation during NYFW this past weekend.  Dive in!

Favorite food is…
None in particular; I love a good curried roti, I also love pounded yam (native Nigerian food).

What do you really think about the union of marriage?
I believe and know that marriage is the most beautiful union between husband and wife that stands and remains on the foundation of God.

Coffee or Tea?
Neither. I do love me some cappuccino once in a while.

If I wasn’t a designer I would be …….
Lawyer or a homemaker.

Music I listen to while designing to JBL is…
I love Nigerian music. Give me some D’banj, Wiz Kid, and Wande Coal any day!

A true style icon is…
Someone who isn’t afraid to make bold choices, who understands true style, and isn’t fazed by trends!

In your opinion, What is the difference between fashion and style?
Fashion is what the industry dictates to individuals, Style is what the individual dictates back to it.

What makes your designs different?
It is always an uber cool interpretation of a modern African aesthetic. We started our signature, embellished Ankara “movement” years ago and have since continued as well as now creating custom afro inspired prints.

How do you manage to stay fresh with each collection every season?
I always push myself every season to try to create something new and exciting with the Ankara fabric and with my prints in general.

What inspired The J Label?
The desire to do something new, the constant demand.

What should we expect next from you?
A beautiful SS12 collection created from a beautiful story of Nigeria in the 60’s.
