Olowu’s celebrated prints line at JCPenney will also include accessories and a chic capsule home collection that will also be available online starting this upcoming Spring (until May 2013). In an interview with Instyle.com, Duro shared his enthusiasm for his limited-edition collection at JCPenney:
“I’ve always said no to collaborations, but I thought jcpenney was a great opportunity. I’ve always tried to give women a sense of inner beauty with joy, and now it’s just the right time to make that more democratic. When I was thinking about this collection, I wanted to give American classic shapes and ideas a global flair.

Duro Olowu bringing his posh prints to mainstream retailer is following suit with previous designer collaborative initiatives like Versace at H&M. The trend now in the fashion industry is to bring their designs to the everyday fashionistas (and his notable built-in fan base like First Lady Michelle Obama) who appreciate designer looks at an affordable price.

Honestly this is a welcome embrace for African Fashion that mainstream fashion has finally recognized the selling power that it brings to the global fashion world and one can only hope that this will serve as a lucrative business launching pad for more influential African fashion designers (like Jewel By Lisa and Tsemaye Binitie) to bring their unique designs for a limited time to a department store near you.
