How did you meet?
We met in the 8th grade at Jack Robey Jr. High School. We had mutual friends so we would hang out after school and at sporting events, but there was no romantic interest. We were just friends. Our friendship continued through high school, but we lost contact in college and went years without talking. One weekend while I was visiting family and friends in Memphis I ran into Datuan on Beale St. We casually greeted each other then went on our separate ways. Later that night Datuan slid into my Twitter DMs saying, “Yo this is my number. Hit me if that’s not too much to ask.” Real smooth, huh? Well smooth or not, lol, I called him the next day while driving back home. We stayed on the phone the entire 3-hour trip and we have been inseparable ever since. I guess it really does go down in the DMs.
Tell us your proposal story:
Unbeknownst to me, Datuan decided in January that he was going to propose to me on my 31st birthday in March. He enlisted the help of my sister and best friends to pull off this huge surprise. My plan was to have a lowkey birthday because I had a huge party for my 30th. Little did I know, I was in for the biggest surprise of my life! Datuan told me he made reservations at my favorite steakhouse and I was expecting to have a nice quiet dinner with just the two of us. However, when I walked into the restaurant I was shocked! Friends from all over the country had come to help celebrate my birthday. I could not believe it! I went from expecting a small, intimate dinner to standing in the middle of a room full of over 40 of my closest family members and friends who had been keeping this secret from me for months. After being both surprised and confused, I turned around to find Datuan on one knee asking me to be his wife.
Describe your engagement session. Did you have a theme?
We literally had a ball during our engagement session! With me being a fashion influencer, we spend a lot of time in front of the camera so taking pictures has become second nature for us. Our photographer is also a close family friend who takes our pictures all the time so we felt very comfortable and were able to put our minds together and make sure the pictures came out just how we wanted them. We didn’t really have a theme, but with our love for fashion, we wanted to make sure we put our best fashion foot forward.
What did you do on your first date?
People always laugh when I tell this story! Our first date was almost ruined due to Datuan having to work overtime and showing up almost 2 hours late. Although I was irritated I pushed through and we went to dinner at Cheddar’s and walked Beale St. Downtown Memphis.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
Our favorite thing to do is to go shopping together. I know that might not be ideal but we both love fashion so much! We also have made it a rule to have “Saturdate” every weekend and we go to dinner and a movie.
How has wedding planning been so far?
Wedding planning has been a little crazy, especially that we are dealing with this coronavirus pandemic. Fortunately, we were done selecting and booking our big vendors before things got too crazy. I’m now in full-on wedding planning mode wrapping up the last few things with 4 months left before our big day. My wedding planners, Jianti Events, have been amazing and have been on us about sticking to deadlines because I can be the worse with procrastination. My bridesmaids are also really involved so the only thing I do is answer yes or no to things and they start and finish it for me. Wedding planning is interesting and our goal is to stick to our budget and execute the vision I have for that day.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.
On our wedding day, I’m looking forward to marrying the man of my dreams and watching our families become one while celebrating our love.
