Sometimes mothers do know best!
Darryl’s mom had a feeling that Meghan would be a great match for her son. So, she approached Meghan after church and asked if she could give Meghan’s number to Darryl. Meghan was apprehensive, but after speaking to Darryl on the phone, she realized they had a lot in common. When they went on their first date, the chemistry was palpable. Meghan shares, “He was a man of his word from the first date and has been consistent since then.”
In a full-circle moment, Darryl decided to propose at the restaurant where he had his first date with Meghan. It was her birthday, so he knew Meghan would not suspect anything. Darryl recalls, “The date proceeded normally until her family arrived saying, ‘Happy Birthday!’ When they arrived, I handed her a card describing my feelings for her and got down on one knee to ask her to marry me.”
To commemorate their engagement, they decided to have a fashionable and fabulous studio engagement session with MunaLuchi Coterie member Shagari Gerard Photography. See all of the details below.

Tell us how you met.
(Meghan) Our story is a classic case of “Mother Knows Best” because Darryl’s mom thought we would be a great match. She approached me after church and asked if it would be okay to give her son my number. Even though I knew who he was, we had never spoken to one another before, so I was reluctant. When he contacted me a few days later, I was hesitant to respond because I didn’t want to play “the dating game” again. But when we talked, we learned that really had a lot in common and decided to schedule our first date. On the night of our date, I noticed that Darryl was a true gentleman because he saved me a parking spot near the restaurant so that I wouldn’t have to walk in the rain. The rest of the night was perfect because it felt like we had been friends for years. After, Darryl was extremely intentional and his actions matched his words. He was a man of his word from the first date and has been consistent since then.
How did he propose?
(Darryl) I was nervous the day of the proposal because I wanted everything to flow smoothly. The week before, I mentioned to Meghan that I thought it would be a great idea for us to revisit to the restaurant where we had our first date for her birthday. She had no idea that I actually planned to propose. When we arrived to the restaurant the place was packed. Luckily, I asked Meghan’s cousin to reserve the secluded area of the restaurant for us in advance. The date proceeded normally until her family arrived saying, “Happy Birthday!” When they arrived, I handed her a card describing my feelings for her and got down on one knee to ask her to marry me. Her reaction was priceless as she immediately said “Oh nice…yes, yes!” when she saw the ring.
Describe your engagement session.
We didn’t know what to expect given that it was our first time doing a photoshoot together, but our photographer was great! We didn’t have a theme, we just wanted to have fun. The photographer and his assistant were great because they knew exactly what to do to bring out the best in us.
What did you do on your first date?
Ate dinner at a seafood restaurant and went to get daiquiris later on that night.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
Honestly, we simply enjoy spending time with each other, but if we had to pick one activity it would definitely be dining out with each other.
How has wedding planning been so far?
We were on a roll the first couple of months, but things slowed down significantly when illness occurred in Meghan’s family. The engagement photoshoot helped to get things moving with wedding planning. Now we’re wondering if the wedding will have to be postponed due to COVID-19. For now, we’re taking it one day at a time.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.
We’re both looking forward to the first look, partying with our family and friends, and spending the rest of our lives together.
