Celebrations have a way of bringing people together. For this couple, physician, Jennifer, and IT consultant, Vincent Ukwu, their festive Nigerian Dallas wedding brought together all their friends and family for fabulous reunion! It was an incredibly exciting moment for Mr. and Mrs. Ukwu that they will never forget.
How They Met
It was February 2010. Jennifer recently moved to Dallas for medical school and also joined a local organization called Young Igbo Community Association of Nigerians (YICAN). One weekend in February they were having a Valentine’s Day Date Auction. There, Jennifer met Vincent in the most amusing way. He was actually up for bid that night!…“On his way to the stage he kissed my hand (he has no recollection of this by the way) and I was outbid by one of his close friends lol.”
Although she did not win the affection of her eye, her friends, with aggressive encouragement, told her give him a chance later. They even told her as far to Facebook investigate him! But without any expectations, Jennifer decided to take that risk and chance it. She sent him a message on Facebook and from then on it was a decision that Jennifer did not regret. “A few hours later, Vincent contacted me via message and conversation continued for a few weeks before we exchanged phone numbers. Conversations eventually turned into dates, of which we became official June 2010.”
The Proposal
Imagine going out on a romantic evening to a beautiful restaurant with your significant other. You might have an idea what might happen but then again never underestimate the possibility of wonderful surprises. Vincent had a surprise for Jennifer before the check came to their table… “I was never into surprises, so for my proposal Vincent took me out to a beautiful restaurant on a quiet evening when he knew I wouldn’t be too embarrassed. He got the waiters to come sing as he told me all the things he loved about me and proceeded to get down on one knee.” Jennifer thought she was just going to have a regular date night with her boyfriend but ended up leaving becoming his wife! She was more than elated to become Mrs. Ekwu!
The Traditional Wedding!
Culture had a major presence at their wedding which took place May 9th, 2015 at St. Monica Catholic Church in Dallas, TX. Nigerian weddings are nothing but colorful, festive, colossal, etc. Jennifer still wore her white wedding gown. It was a stunning, fitted dropped waist gown with asymmetrical ruffles in the skirt. Swarovski crystal beads were embellished along the sweetheart neckline and bodice. The couple both wore their traditional outfits and danced out onto the dance floor with their respective native village towns. Jennifer and Vincent also shared their first dance to John Legend’s “You and I”
It was a lavish, fun wedding for the Ukwus and we wish them all the best in their marriage!
