It’s not always easy fitting reading into your average day but it is possible, especially with the right book. Below are five young adult novels with fascinating love stories within them that you might find yourself engrossed in, so much so that you’ll finish reading in one sitting or one day.
1. 5 to 1 by Holly Bodger
In the year 2054, after decades of gender selection, India now has a ratio of five boys for every girl, making women an incredibly valuable commodity. Tired of marrying off their daughters to the highest bidder and determined to finally make marriage fair, the women who form the country of Koyanagar have instituted a series of tests so that every boy has the chance to win a wife.
This beautiful, unique novel is told from alternating points of view—Sudasa’s in verse and Kiran’s in prose.
If that’s not fascinating, I don’t know what is. While this book isn’t necessarily heavy on the romance, it is a haunting story that will linger with you long after reading.
2. Tiny Pretty Things by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton
This has been pitched as The Black Swan meets Pretty Little Liars but I think it’s safe to say that if you also like Gossip Girl or Mean Girls and want a super fun read, this is the book for you. You will devour this and wonder where the time went. This isn’t a small book, either. So if you’re aiming to read this one in a day, pick it up on your day off because you won’t want to do anything else. Tiny Pretty Things is a romance with tons of juicy drama right at your fingertips, told in multiple points of view. This debut novel from Charaipotra and Clayton doesn’t waste any time diving right into the intensity of the world that’s been created here so buckle in and prepare yourself for the ride.
3. Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi
Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland–known as The Death Shop–are slim. If the cannibals don’t get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She’s been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He’s wild–a savage–and her only hope of staying alive.
This is a diamond in the rough. I almost didn’t read this because I didn’t quite connect with the synopsis but boy am I glad that I took a chance on this and simply started reading. Not only did I start reading this but I stayed up through the night to finish it. It was worth every minute. This story, these diverse characters and the relationships that grow over the course of the trilogy, the writing… it’s all so breathtakingly beautiful. The tension is real. The danger is real. The emotions will rise up within you as you feel like you are right there beside these characters in this world where it seems everything, even nature is against them. It’s a beautiful story that I will never forget.
4. Cinder by Marissa Meyer
A fairytale retelling unlike any other, in this sci-fi story set in New Beijing, Cinder is a cyborg and gifted mechanic whose life changes forever the day Prince Kai comes into her shop. I read this book in three sittings; it would have been one had I not had to get up and go to the airport and later, settle in on a plane. Cinder is the first in The Lunar Chronicles series, each book afterwards introducing another fairytale character that we all know and love. First is Cinder, then Scarlet, Cress, and finally, the highly anticipated Winter which releases this November. If you’ve never read a fairytale retelling before, you’ll want to start now.
5. Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
Releasing September 1st from Delacorte Books, Everything, Everything already has buzz around it and is one of the most anticipated reads of the Fall. This debut novel by Yoon tells the story of a girl who is literally allergic to the outside world. If you’re looking for an innovative read, pre-order this title and get ready to be amazed.
