Dominique, a middle school teacher and Juan, an I.T. Systems Administrator have saved the date for a June 25, 2016 Washington D.C. wedding. Currently living in New York, the lovebirds are very excited to move to D.C. where Dominique once lived for eight years, as well as wed in their new home town. A day sure to go much smoother than Juan’s proposal plans! Good thing he can think on his feet! See how it all went down below!
Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal!
The short version is that we met at work. The long version goes a little something like this…I first noticed Juan when I brought my broken computer to the tech room at work. He was so smart, sweet, and polite, and I loved his smile! I pretty much spent the rest of that school year in the tech room, trying to get noticed by my new crush–I conveniently had a “computer problem” every week. Though a few of my hints went unnoticed – or so I thought, he finally took the bait when I included him in a mass Happy Thanksgiving text. We talked on the phone that night and to my surprise, I wasn’t the only one with the crush. He liked me too!
Juan: The proposal plan was…our families would go out to dinner at a restaurant outside and a flash mob would come over asking for her autograph (since she was on Making The Band). That fell short because a flashmob is expensive. The second idea was to go to one of her favorite restaurants inside Fort Tryon Park and have the staff do the same thing. But the restaurant was closed for a private event the week I wanted to do it. So I brought her to the restaurant and when we saw “Closed for Private Event,” I suggested we go up into the park for a few minutes. She turned away from me to see the view and was sad the dinner plans fell through. I said, “It’s okay. It’s all going according to plan.” I dropped to my knees, took out the box and opened it. Dominique started to turn around and say, “What do you mean according to…” and stopped once she saw where I was. Although it wasn’t my original plan, it was amazing.
There was no specific theme. We did decide to take the pictures in Washington D.C. as opposed to NYC where we live, since we’re getting married in DC. We really just wanted the love we have for each other to shine bright through our engagement photos. We were so impressed with Joshua Dwain Photography! Joshua took pictures that truly showed who we are as a couple and we had an amazing time!
What did you do on your first date?
On our first date, we went to a restaurant called Thai Market (on the upper west side of Manhattan). We got so wrapped up in our conversation that the server asked us if we wouldn’t mind giving up our table, since we’d been there for three hours and it was getting crowded! We basically got kicked out haha! We were completely captivated by each other and had no idea how three hours had gone by so quickly. To this day, Thai Market has a special place in our hearts.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
We always love to curl up on the couch and watch our favorite TV shows!
How has wedding planning been so far?
Wedding planning has been a breeze! We have the best wedding planner on the planet, Mrs. Diane George of Covenant Weddings. She has made the process so pleasant for us!
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.
