Abigail and Larry’s love story began with a little help from their furbabies.
It started like any other day for Abigail. While completing her residency at UNC Hospital, she recalls, “After a long day at work, I came home and walked my dogs. Little did I know, this night would be different. This night, I would meet my future husband.”
As Abigail walked her furbabies, Leo and Taz, outside her apartment complex, she noticed a guy walking with a big Doberman. Around that same area, she also noticed someone had forgotten to pick up after their pup. Thinking Larry was the guilty culprit, she kindly offered him a poop bag.
From that day forward, “Our dogs acted as our wingmen, always making excuses for us to talk,” Abigail shares. Following a first date (fittingly at a dog park) and going on adventures together, soon they were inseparable. Larry ultimately proposed with a gorgeous black diamond wedding ring, setting them on their journey towards “I do!”
Looking back, I can’t believe how lucky we were to have our dogs bring us together. When you know you know! It just goes to show that sometimes, God has a way of bringing people into our lives when we least expect it. And in my case, it was through the unconditional love of our furry friends.
– Abigail (The Bride)
The couple invited their friends and family to the beautiful island of Jamaica for their wedding day. Set against crystal blue waters, the bride celebrated the vibrant spirit of her Jamaican roots in everything from their food to the music and colorful tropical attire worn by their guests. A top highlight of their wedding day was their entertainment, which included a Grammy Award-Winning LIVE band featuring Sheléa Melody McDonald.
On a more personal note, the bride and groom shared, “Our wedding was not just a union of two individuals but also a celebration of excellence and achievement within the Black medical community.”
Abigail’s father, a Physician in Jamaica, and most of her family and in-laws are top medical doctors in their respective fields. This included many of their wedding guests.
Abigal shares, “Among our esteemed guests were my sister-in-law, Dr. Alicia Egolum, a celebrated figure in the medical community and a cast member on the hit TV show “Married to Medicine.” Her dedication to healthcare and her presence at our wedding added an extra layer of joy and inspiration to our special day.”
Dr. Phil McDonald, known as Dr. X Primetime on Social media, was also in attendance with his wife, Sheléa, who sang at their wedding. Abigail adds, “Dr. McDonald serves as the Sports Medicine Radiologist for prominent sports leagues such as the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB. His expertise and influence in the medical industry are truly commendable.”
Working in the medical industry themselves, Abigail and Larry were truly grateful to have their friends, family, and esteemed guests support them on their wedding day.

How they met…
Our dogs actually introduced us! Leo and Taz, my two little guard dogs had a way of making new friends, and that’s exactly what happened that day. As I was walking, I noticed a guy walking his big Doberman. I also noticed that around that same area where he was walking his dog, that dog poop had not been picked up and I suspected he was the guilty culprit, so I kindly asked him if he needed a poop bag!
Our first conversation was brief but memorable. He was charming and had a great sense of humor. I couldn’t help but be drawn to him. After that day, we started running into each other more frequently. Our dogs acted as our wingmen, always making excuses for us to talk. It was clear we had a connection, and we started dating shortly after. We fell in Love and have come so far in nurturing and growing our relationship. It’s so precious to me!
The proposal:
When he popped the question it was an automatic YES!! The ring he gave me was stunning and perfect. It reflected the essence of our love and commitment to each other. The “Black Diamond” is a symbol of our individual journeys and how two imperfect people came together to make something Beautiful! I treasure it even more with each passing day.
Our love story is a testament to the saying that true love is worth waiting for. And I’m grateful that we found each other during the most unexpected circumstances. Who knew that walking my dogs at our apartment complex would lead me to find the love of my life? The unexpected encounter with my fiancé while doing my residency at UNC Hospital made me believe in God’s destiny for me.
The perfect first date at the dog park and getting to know each other opened up a new chapter in our journey together. And now with the proposal, we are excited about starting this new journey together as a married couple. So always keep your heart and mind open, who knows what God has in store for you!
Wedding Dress Shopping:
Dress shopping was an unforgettable adventure filled with laughter, sisterly banter, and the wise guidance of my mother, who flew all the way from Jamaica to join the fun.
Picture this: a room filled with tulle and lace, the air buzzing with excitement as my sisters and I sifted through countless gowns. Amidst the chaos, my mother’s discerning eye and infectious laughter brought so much clarity and joy. We found the perfect dress, and the experience became a cherished chapter in my pre-wedding tale.
Bridal Party Attire:
The bridesmaids stole the show in a delightful array of Tropical-colored Marigold gowns from Azazie, each showcasing their unique style. Adding a touch of elegance, the matron of honor graced the celebration in a stunning coral-colored gown. The cohesive yet diverse look was a true reflection of the vibrant energy surrounding us.
Our groom and groomsmen were the epitome of suave sophistication in tan Joseph Abboud linen suits paired with crisp white shirts and Gucci loafers adorned with coral accent pocket squares. The tropical vibes were in full swing, making the entire ensemble pop with flair.

Jamaican Culture:
Being Jamaican holds a special place in my heart, I am a proud Jamaican Caribbean Gal!! I wanted our wedding to reflect the vibrant spirit of my roots. Picture the scene: a private beachfront ceremony right on the sand, with the rhythmic waves serenading our vows. The setting sun painted the sky with hues of coral and gold, mirroring the warmth of our love.
Jamaican culture weaved through every detail, from the reggae beats of the steel pan band to the live orchestral string ensemble that set the mood. And I can’t forget the world-renowned chef Ashebre who whipped up the delectable flavors of Jamaican cuisine. Guests were greeted with the sweet aroma of jerk chicken, oxtails, and Red Snapper!
We did not hold back on anything surrounding the Jamaican feast! The refreshing homemade Sorrel and Ginger Beer to the zing of coconut water served in fresh coconuts. The vibrant colors of the Marigold gowns echoed the tropical blooms of the island, creating a visual symphony of Jamaican influences.
Best Memory:
The best memory? Picture the dance floor, where happiness and love became a joyous celebration. My husband and I, surrounded by the laughter and joy of family and friends, danced the night away. The beats of reggae and the sounds of laughter merged into a harmonious melody, Pure bliss! It was a moment frozen in time, where love, laughter, and the rhythm of celebration intertwined to create the perfect memory.
Our wedding was not just an event; it was a love story infused with humor, cultural richness, and the vibrant energy of Jamaica. Lots of laughter, family, and love!

Reception Space + Decor:
Advice for other engaged couples…
Darlings, buckle up for a dose of wisdom served with a side of humor from your Jamaican, physician, and newlywed sister! Here’s the tea on navigating the wedding whirlwind:
Prioritize Your Sanity:
Remember, you are not a superhero, and planning a wedding is not a one-woman show. Delegate tasks, hire professionals, and resist the urge to micromanage. Your mental health is your ultimate treasure – protect it fiercely.
Love, Laughter, and Lipstick:
Love is a given, but don’t underestimate the power of laughter and a fabulous shade of lipstick. Laughter will get you through the stressful moments, and a killer lipstick will make you feel unstoppable. Trust me, it’s the secret sauce.
Cultural Elegance:
Embrace your cultural roots and infuse your celebration with elements that speak to your heritage. Whether it’s a special dance, traditional attire, or incorporating your favorite Caribbean dishes – let your culture shine.
Dress Dash:
Ladies heed my advice – practice your bathroom dash in that dress! Wedding gowns are gorgeous but can be a logistical challenge. Know how to elegantly navigate a restroom break, or recruit your bridesmaids for some undercover assistance.
The Great Unplug:
Consider a brief “unplugged” moment during your ceremony. Encourage your guests to put away their phones and fully immerse themselves in the magic of your union. The professional photographer will thank you, and you’ll cherish the genuine presence of your loved ones.
Dance Like No One’s Watching:
Literally. Dance your heart out. Hire a Professional DJ!! Whether you’ve got two left feet or the grace of a gazelle, the dance floor is your kingdom. Your wedding day is not the time for ballroom perfection; it’s the time for unapologetic, joyful movement.
Budget Battles:
Money talks can be tricky, but they’re vital. Set a budget, stick to it, and be transparent with your partner. Financial harmony from the get-go sets the stage for a lifetime of shared goals and successful money management.
Marriage, Not Just a Wedding:
Amidst the chaos of planning, don’t lose sight of the fact that you’re not just preparing for a wedding day; you’re building a marriage. Keep your focus on the love you share and the adventure that lies ahead.
Emergency Kit Extravaganza:
Create a wedding emergency kit with all the essentials – safety pins, stain remover, breath mints, you name it. You’ll be the hero of the day when someone needs a quick fix, and your bridesmaids will thank you.
Savor the Moments:
Your wedding day is a whirlwind, and it will be over in the blink of an eye. Take intentional moments throughout the day to soak it all in. It’s a celebration of love, and every second deserves to be cherished.
Lights, Camera, “I Do”:
In the age of technology, consider adding a modern twist to your celebration by live-streaming your wedding! It’s like bringing Hollywood to your love story. Whether it’s for distant relatives, friends who can’t make it, or those who appreciate a good love story, live streaming lets you share your magical moment with the world.
Live streaming ensures that your Auntie in Jamaica, your bestie across the globe, or even those stuck in unexpected situations can still be part of your special day. It’s not just a technological fad; it’s a game-changer for inclusivity.
Plus, think of the candid, unfiltered moments captured in real-time – the laughter, tears, and unexpected dance moves that might have been missed in photos. It’s a virtual front-row seat for everyone, turning your wedding into a global celebration.
Roll out the virtual red carpet, set up those cameras, and let the world witness the grandeur of your love story. It’s not just a wedding; it’s a blockbuster event, and everyone’s invited – digitally!
So, my beautiful engaged couples, embrace the chaos, laugh in the face of stress, and remember that your wedding is just the beginning of an extraordinary journey. Here’s to love, laughter, and a lifetime of joy! Cheers!
