Anita and Michael first crossed paths at a church conference in New Orleans. Over the course of the next two years, they spoke to each other in passing until one evening at another gathering their connection reached a new level.
“All evening, we kept looking at each other,” Anita fondly recalls. As if guided by a higher power, the very next night they were enjoying a first date – taking their first steps on the path of together forever…

Tell us how you met. Michael and I met in New Orleans, LA in December of 2015 while attending a church conference. At that time, we casually spoke to each other and moved on. However, it wasn’t until July of 2016 that we actually held a conversation with each other. We were in Greensboro, NC for another church conference. At the time we both caught each other’s attention. Michael’s dad had just been appointed Bishop over the Southwestern Delta Episcopal District of the AME Zion Church. As fate would have it, I am a member of that Episcopal District. I walked up to greet Michael, and to offer him a warm welcome to our area. We casually conversed and parted ways with a hug. We didn’t see each other again until January of 2017 at his dad’s 40th Year in Ministry Celebration. That was the day that our lives changed forever. All evening, we kept looking at each other. Eventually, we greeted each other and casually conversed. The next day, he came to my church Cathedral AME Zion Church in Jackson, MS. After church was over, Michael walked up to me and asked me could he take me out on a date. I nervously said yes. That evening, we went bowling, and Michael cheated the entire night! After a wonderful time bowling, we went to Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner. Needless to say, we didn’t eat our dinner. We talked for about two hours about life and our personal goals. After dinner, I went home, and we talked to each other until about 2:00 am. From that day on, we have been best friends.
Tell us all about the proposal. Michael proposed to me on March 17, 2018, at McCormick and Schmicks in Charlotte, NC. This day was supposed to be a birthday and promotion celebration for Michael and his sister Michelle. Both of our families and friends were there, so nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Once we got to dinner, Michael stood up and thanked everyone for coming to celebrate with them. He began to say sweet things about me, and to be honest I still didn’t realize what was going on. Michael has always showered me with sweet words. The moment he got down on one knee, the world stood still…
