“The first thing I noticed was his smile and how handsome he was,” Cor’Shawna recalls, thinking back on the first time she crossed paths with Robert on the campus of Stillman College.
Quickly mentioning to her friend that he should introduce them, their conversation would reveal that “not only was Robert handsome but he was giving.” Exchanging numbers on the spot, Cor’Shawna and Robert became inseparable – talking almost every day. After a year of devoted friendship, they followed their hearts into each other’s arms – first as an engaged couple and finally as husband and wife…

How They Met: April 27th, 2011, Alabama’s biggest tornado hit Tuscaloosa, Pratt City, & Birmingham. The next day after the storm, many people gave their money and time to search for people and help those in need. April 28th, 2011 after a long day of walking the streets of Tuscaloosa passing out food, clothes, and toiletries with a few friends, I came back to the campus of Stillman College. As I’m standing in front of Stinson Hall chatting with friends about the day, a young man walks by greets a few people with a handshake and smile and walks off towards the cafe. The first thing I noticed was his smile and how handsome he was. So I asked my friend Jeremy “Hey who is that?” He said, “Oh that’s Rashad. He’s new to our school.” I mention to Jeremy that I think he should introduce us. We continue to chat with a few other friends and sit in front of Bachelor Building. Rashad comes back from the cafe and stops to talk. He starts talking about his day and how he and the football team got up to volunteer in the city, helping out any way they could. I was impressed, not only was he handsome but he was giving. Jeremy introduces Robert and I. I’d flirt to let him know that he can ask for my number at any time now. He finally did and I put my number in his phone. I swear from that day forward we talked almost every day. We stayed friends for a year before we actually started dating. In that time we talked about everything! I mean literally, we were best friends since April 28th, 2011. We gained a friendship that turned into something special. On May 17th, 2012 he asked me to be his girlfriend.
The Proposal: Five years later on May 21st, 2017, during an intimate, romantic walk in the park through Aldridge Gardens, in Hoover, AL, he confessed his love for me, his aspirations for our future, and asked me for my hand in marriage. In between those five years, there has been the birth of our child, love, loss, laughter, forgiveness, new jobs, and failed investments; but one thing that was and has always remained the same is our friendship and our faith. There are a few sayings that we continue to use and even teach our son; “Team Together, Never Apart” meaning no matter how many miles, days, months we ever have to be apart we’re always together in spirit. “As long as we’re trying, we can not fail!” “Keep God first, always!”
