Want to make a daring beauty statement on your wedding day? Try a red lip. Red lips draw attention, and women who rock them exude confidence, charisma, and sensuality. No wonder some of our most revered divas including Dorothy Dandridge and Diana Ross have famously wore red lipstick. Here are some tips to achieve the perfect red lip for your wedding.
Choose Your Perfect Shade of Red
There is a red lipstick color for every skin tone and preference. There are orange-based reds and pink-based reds. You can even go for a deep mesmerizing wine or burgundy red. Our favorite red is a striking blue-based red. Blue based red lipsticks make your teeth look whiter and are flattering on all skin tones. Prep Your Lips
Exfoliate and moisturize your lips! No lipstick will apply well to dry lips. Use a lip exfoliating scrub, like the Elf Lip Exfoliator, to remove any dead skin. Then apply a moisturizing lip balm or mask and leave it on your lips for at least ten minutes. (You can leave the lip balm on while you do the rest of your makeup.) Wipe off the lip balm, and your lips will be soft and ready for lipstick application. You can also prep your lips the night before. We love to slather on overnight lip masks like the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. Your lips will be soft and supple in the morning.
Wear a Matte Lipstick
Many brides avoid wearing red lipstick on their wedding day because they are afraid it will transfer. Ensure your lipstick stays in place by purchasing a matte red lipstick. A budge-proof, comfortable matte red liquid lipstick will have the most staying power. We love the Artistic Liquid Matte lipsticks by Make Up For Ever. However, traditional matte red lipstick bullets can be made budge-proof by following these steps:
- Use a red lip liner to outline your lips. This will help keep your lipstick from bleeding outside of your lip line.
- Apply one layer of the lipstick.
- Blot your lips with a napkin.
- Use a makeup wedge sponge to lightly apply translucent powder over your lips. Try our favorite Translucent Powder by Laura Mercier.
- Apply another layer of lipstick.
- Gently blot your lips again with a napkin.
- Use a clean sponge to apply translucent setting powder on the skin around your lip line to prevent transfer.
Your red lipstick will have some serious staying power after following these steps.
Be Prepared for Touch Ups
No matter what lipstick you wear, chances are you will have to do a quick lipstick touch up as you party and eat cake! Have your lip liner, lipstick, and a lip brush ready for a touch-up.
If wearing a bold red lip color fulfills your wedding glam dreams, go for it. Follow this advice, and your vivacious red lips will be a showstopper.
