Whitney and Malcolm’s industrial chic wedding at The Butterfly Room in Baltimore, Maryland celebrated love, faith, and family!
Before Whitney and Malcolm met, separately they each lifted prayers in faith that God would reveal the person he had set aside just for them…
Whitney and Malcolm met online during the Spring of 2022. After a few exchanges, they both felt they had a strong connection. They would spend whole nights talking, until the early hours of the morning, but soon reality hit.
They lived 3.5 hours away from each other and were both single parents with full-time jobs. Neither desired to pursue a long-distance relationship, but after thinking it over they leaned into their faith and stayed strong, seeing where their connection would take them.
Three weeks later they went on their first date, meeting each other halfway in Richmond, Virginia. After enjoying dinner, seeing a movie, and hanging out in a bar, the pair talked for hours in the car, not wanting the night to end.
As night became morning and just before they both departed for home, a feeling overwhelmed Malcolm. Why mess around? She is it! Malcolm boldly asked Whitney if they could make their relationship official and she said yes without hesitation.
From that point on Whitney and Malcolm FaceTimed every day to overcome the distance between them. They met every couple of weeks, including their children in many of the outings to bring their families closer together.
Knowing how hard Whitney is to surprise, Malcolm proposed spontaneously at his home one weekend, just before Whitney left. Whitney was completely taken by surprise. Overcome with joy and happiness, she of course said “Yes!”.
Whitney and Malcolm fell in love with their unique, industrial venue, The Butterfly Room. Once a woodworking shop, The Butterfly Room was revamped into a unique, industrial event space. Whitney and Malcolm were both inspired by the meaning of the venue’s name and found that it resonated with their love story.
In woodworking, a butterfly joint keeps two halves of wood from splitting. They incorporated this symbol into their chic wedding logo, created by Malcolm, honoring the venue and signifying their coming together.

How they met…
Whitney and Malcolm first met online. Their love story is rooted in their faith in God. Before they met, separately they each lifted prayers in faith that God would reveal the person he had set aside just for them.
Whitney and Malcolm met online in the Spring of 2022, during the backend of the COVID-19 pandemic. They knew after their first few chat exchanges that their connection was very strong. After exchanging numbers, they would spend nights talking until the early morning hours. But soon they faced a dilemma.
How could two single parents, working full time and living 3.5 hours away make a meaningful relationship work? Neither desired a long-distance relationship. It was a sobering reality they faced. Again, they leaned on their faith and took it to prayer. After sleeping on it, the morning brought peace and clarity. God’s going to work this out!
The first date of many…
Their first date, half the distance between them in Richmond, Virginia, came three weeks later. It began at Bookbinder’s restaurant for dinner and then a movie afterward. The night was amazing!
Following the movie they sat in a small bar, then just in the car and continued to talk for hours. Neither of them wanted the night to end. As night became morning and just before they both departed for home, a feeling overwhelmed Malcolm. Why mess around? She is it! As the date concluded, Malcolm boldly asked Whitney if they could make their relationship official and she said yes without hesitation.
After just a couple of weeks since they first connected, their dating profiles were deleted. Throughout their time courting they remained on one accord. Family was critically important to them both; so, they included their children. Many dates and outings followed and the couple rarely went more than two weeks without spending time together, often prioritizing family time. The couple FaceTimed daily to help overcome the distance.
A spontaneous proposal…
On Tuesday, April 11th, 2023, after mulling over how he would surprise his notoriously hard-to-surprise bride-to-be with a proposal; Malcolm decided spontaneity was the way to go. Malcolm proposed to his love Whitney in his home just before she was preparing to head back following a long weekend. Stunned and overjoyed, she said “Yes!”. They are blessed and excited to unite their family and establish a home together full of faith and love.
Our logo was designed by my talented graphic designer extraordinaire husband. We were married at The Butterfly Room in Baltimore which is a working wood shop turned venue. We fell in love with its industrial, unique vibe. It is named after a technique used in woodworking called a “butterfly joint.” A Butterfly joint is used to keep two halves of a board from splitting. The logo consists of an M and W binded by a butterfly joint. Malcolm used this symbol to not only pay respects to the venue but also signify him and I joining together as one.

Finding the dream dress…
It was a wonderful, intimate experience with my mom and some bubbly at Love Couture Bridal in Potomac, Maryland. Ms. Valerie (alterations) was an absolute doll in making my dress dreams come true.
Culture…
We incorporated a jumping-the-broom element to honor our African American culture. We also included an altar call during our wedding ceremony. God and faith are what brought us together and we wanted that part of us to shine through and allow our loved ones to use our love story as a testament. We also wanted to give them the opportunity to dedicate or rededicate their lives to Christ.
Best memories…
The best part was being able to see what we envisioned and talked about for months come to fruition and seeing our loved ones enjoying the moment as well.
Advice for engaged couples…
Embrace every moment, make it your own, and do not lose sight of the most important elements… love and marriage.
