Who knew a piece of candy would be the start of a sweet and affectionate romance?
Spotting him from afar, Cydney approached Meecie with a simple question and took fate into her own hands by searching high and low for his number. Surprised by her tenacity, Meecie knew for certain he couldn’t let this love pass him by. Enraptured by his love for Cydney, he prepared his own proposal speech, but with butterflies, it wasn’t until a beautiful night in St. Lucia where Meecie would finally erase his nerves and deliver the message he had waited so long to say.

Tell us how you met. Meecie drove by on a side road in Biscoe, NC and stopped to speak to his cousin when I walked up to his car and noticed his Navy NY fitted hat and gorgeous smile and asked if I could have some of his Now & Later Candy. He left without me getting his number, but within one day I found his number and called. He was extremely surprised I found his number and said, “No one gets my number that easily.”
Tell us all about the proposal. It was May of 2017 and we had a family cookout. For the first time, both sides of our family were coming together for a cookout. I had rushed all day and sent Meecie ahead of me and told him I would be down a little later. I arrived at the cookout and things went on as normal; however, I did notice several of the men were taking turns going up to the front porch and coming back. At the end of the cookout Camille, his best groom’s woman said she had a few things to say and begin to thank everyone for coming. Camille then turned to Meecie and said he had a few things to say. Meecie said I want to thank everyone for coming and always support me. Meecie grabs a stem off a tree and starts walking towards me saying “I want to especially thank Cydney and all she’s done for me!” His voice starts to tremble and his eyes feel with tears. In my mind, I start to think “Oooo no what’s wrong, who’s sick?” As Meecie gets closer to me he says “I want to say I love you Cydney” He fell to his knee and started stuttering the words “Will……..will….. will you marry me?” Totally surprised I say “YES!!!!” and immediately everyone burst into laughter and yelled, “Man what happened!” I soon found out Meecie was taking turns asking several of the men to go up to the front porch to practice his proposal that he had spent several weeks writing and remembering. Two days later we left for St. Lucia to celebrate our engagement and while on our trip Meecie read his proposal to me and I cried like a baby because it was wonderfully special.
How did you know they were “the one”? I knew Cydney was the one when she said “I would do anything for you no matter how difficult it was” and soon that statement was put to the test. I had asked her to offer her support to someone who really needed help, which was someone she did not see eye to eye with. She swallowed her pride and did what was best. Needless to say, she passed with flying colors.
Describe your wedding attire. Modern & Glam!
What was wedding shopping like for you? Difficult. Being 4’11 and finding dresses that were proportionate to my bust and waist was difficult.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Yes, Meecie and I incorporated the tasting ceremony from the Yoruba tradition. It is said to represent the promise to love your partner “for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health.” It corporates vinegar, lemon, cayenne pepper, and honey are traditional choices used to represent the bitter, sour, hot, and, of course, sweet parts of life and marriage.
What is your best memory from your wedding? Groom: “When Cydney performed a dedication ceremony and gave gifts to the children. Also, the fireworks that went off after I removed Cydney’s garter belt.”
Bride: “Looking into my soon to be husbands’ eyes after making it down the aisle and the feeling of overwhelming love, dedication and peace overcame me. Also the gift the groom gave me! It was a box that contained a onesie with our unborn child’s nickname and a bib that said “For This Child, We have prayed” This was extremely special to me because I underwent a surgical procedure to correct a medical condition that could prevent me from conceiving.”
