Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. In the Army at Fort Carson, Colorado. A friend played cupid on us, stating we really liked each other, but we never knew each other. For the proposal, we went to Jerry’s parents’ house for a Christmas celebration. He had already given me my gift prior to us visiting his parents. While exchanging gifts we were sitting at the dinner table, he handed me a big box stating that he had another gift. At this point, I thought it was a new iPhone. While opening the box, I noticed that it was empty. My husband is known for messing with me from time to time. As I turn around to pop him, he was already down on one knee asking me to be his one and only, all the while his family was secretly recording the proposal. I guess I was the only one that wasn’t in on it.
Describe your wedding attire. I wore a beautiful off white gown from designer Zac Posen for my ceremony and another white mermaid gown from the same designer for my reception. My husband wore a white jacket with black trim and black pants with suspenders from designer Sean John.
What was the wedding shopping experience like for you? The shopping experience was tiresome and exhausting, to say the least. however, I really did enjoy shopping with my mom, she was there for me every step of the way to include my sister and soon to be sister-in-law. I was really tough because I live in Florida and the wedding took place in New York where most of the family were, so it was quite a hassle. I was happy in the end because I knew everything was done to my liking.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? I am Jamaican and my husband’s family is from Haiti. My husband was born in the United States and I grew up in the United States, so there had to be a mixture of several cultures at the wedding.
Wedding Party Gifts: We gave them a taste of our cultures; Rum Cake (Jamaica) and Cremas (Haiti).
Ceremony Entrance Song: “You for Me” by Johnny Gill
First Dance Song: “This Is Why I Love You” by Major.
What is your best memory from your wedding? Our best memories of the wedding were the reception and seeing both our family coming together as one.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Always be patient, everything will happen when it’s supposed to. Never ever go to bed angry at each other because tomorrow is never promised.
