After an intimate proposal at home as the clock struck midnight on Mother’s Day, LaToya was elated to begin planning the rest of her life with Kalvador and their beautiful daughter. Then, after picking out her dress twice, once, with the help of loved ones, the second and final time returning the dress to get the one that she really fell in love with, LaToya was all set to walk down the aisle and say, “I do.”

Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal!
Kal and I met in 2005; I was living in Baltimore, MD attending Morgan State University. Kal was in town from Charlotte, NC visiting a mutual friend, when he arrived at the same after church dinner gathering. It was a group of people so we didn’t really have a one on one conversation but he asked where I was from and my name. We spoke briefly, but rejoined our group of friends. At the end of the night, I was prepared to say my good bye and nice meeting you speech when I was asked to give Kal and his buddy a ride to the airport the following morning. I agreed.
I dropped him off the next morning and gave my good bye nice to meet you speech then, never expecting to see him again. Later that evening, my phone rang and it was Kal. He had obtained my number from our mutual friend. He wanted to know if I could pick him from airport in a few days for a day trip? My response was did they think I was a taxicab? We both laughed but in that moment, I knew it was more than a call for an airport pickup.
We ended up speaking all night. I picked him up from the airport and we had our first date. It was wonderful, but back to Charlotte he went. We dated long distance for a few years but the distance began to take its toll so we split. But God’s plan was bigger and in our time apart, we could not shake the feeling we had for each other. After almost two years of not speaking, we found each other again and picked up where we left off, this time, older and wiser.
It was the night before Mother’s Day and he and I along with our daughter were up late watching TV. When Kal and our daughter walked up to me, I had no idea what he was doing so I kept on looking at my phone! Then he got down on his knee with the ring box in one hand and our daughter in the other and explained his feelings for me and what I meant to him and at exactly 12:01a.m. he said, “Will you marry me?” The best Mother’s Day gift ever! I cried. It was perfect, just the three of us taking the steps at making our family stronger than ever.
Wedding Style
My wedding style idea was to have a soft and elegant wedding with a bright feel of summer. Dress shopping wasn’t what I expected… the first time I went, I did so alone so I could get a feel for what I liked without the opinions of others. The second time I went, I brought along my mom and face timed my friends. We decided on a dress! Not the dress I ended up with though as I went back and I picked the dress I loved more, not the dress we all liked.
Memories
If I had to pick my best memory, it would be the lead up to and the moment I walked down the aisle. As I walked toward the door before the song began to play, my heart was filled with so much joy. Everything had finally come together and we were going to profess our love in front of the people we held dear. When the music started to play and the words to the song, “Golden” by Chrisette Michele came in and I stepped out into the aisle and saw Kal standing there my heart was filled with love! It so overwhelmed me tears began to fill my eyes. By far the best memory!
Help a bride-to-be out!
My best advice would be to stay calm and remain true to yourself. It’s about you and your groom, not your family or others with many opinions! And the number one piece of advice… hire a planner! They are life savers and keep you from making bad decisions.
