How did you meet Masai?
It was 2018 and after being single for three years I was ready to put myself out there. Creating a list, I wrote all the qualities I wanted in a partner and prayed on it afterward. My friend suggested I sign up for a dating app; I downloaded Coffee Meets Bagel, created a profile, and matched with Masai a week later. I thought he was cute, so I took the initiative and sent the first message.
He, of course, took FOREVER to respond lol but once he did…let’s just say it took us a while to get into the swing of the conversation. Eventually, we exchanged numbers and what started as awkward text messages turned into hours-long conversations on the phone. We’ve been love-gazed chatterboxes ever since.
Tell us about the proposal…
Masai told me there would be a gala honoring an attorney that he works with and asked me to be his plus one. I didn’t know what to expect but I knew that a “gala” meant “dress to impress” and that is exactly what I intended to do.
My sister and friends helped me pick out the perfect dress. At first, I was sincerely out of the loop but after days of our friends and family dropping hints, I started putting two and two together. I played along though.
The day of the “gala” arrived and there we were, walking into a beautifully decorated space filled with our closest friends and family — many of whom I was genuinely surprised to see. Masai asked me to marry him, and we went on to planning our wedding.
How was your experience shopping for the perfect wedding dress?
I loved wedding shopping and I wish I could do it all over again! Having so much fun, I went to two other bridal shops before my appointment at Pantora because I wanted to have an idea of what type of dress and style would fit my body. Ultimately, I knew I always wanted a dress from Pantora Bridal and the fact that they’re Black-owned solidified it for me.
What are Rommie and Masai wearing?
Rommie is wearing a pure white lace mermaid dress from the Pantora Bridal 2022 Honor collection with a matching cathedral veil.
Masai is wearing a black tuxedo with a double-breasted velvet jacket that was custom-made at Suitsupply with the wedding date printed in gold on the collar.
The details…
Wedding Theme:
Masai and I are both Caribbean but from two different countries (Barbados and Haiti). We decided early on that both of our cultures should be represented throughout our wedding. To do so, we wanted to start with our vendors because it was important for us to support Black businesses and hire multicultural vendors. Vendors were selected from Haiti, the US, Nigeria, and Jamaica.
Our intimate ceremony was conducted in both French and English and then we danced through our reception to Kompa, Soca, Hip Hop, and Afrobeats. The cocktail hour also included a Caribbean station with food such as griot, jerk chicken, rice and peas, and plantains. We had a menu of Caribbean wedding favors including rum punch made with the famous Haitian rum Barbancourt and Mount Gay the Bajan rum.
What was your best wedding memory?
Our best wedding memory is our first look.
Rommie: The butterflies I felt leading up to walking up to him is a memory that I will forever cherish. In that moment everything around us stopped and it was simply about the two of us.
Masai: For me, it was the moment when I turned around to see her and her smile was simply captivating and reassuring. We read our vows to each other; the intimacy was how we envisioned it to be.
Any advice for others planning their wedding?
Rommie: The best wedding advice that I would give engaged couples is to enjoy the planning process because this is such a special time. You may never have another opportunity to plan such an important event, so enjoy every venue walk-through, tastings, and fittings. Masai and I turned these moments into fun dates and opportunities for us to include our families in our planning process because we wanted them to feel involved.
Masai: Be patient and save!
