Kimberly met Adekunle at a cafe while waiting on her date to arrive. Yes, her date. That date was late. Ade sat down instead. And now, the gorgeous couple are anticipating their May 14th nuptials and traditional Nigerian wedding celebration on June 25th in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and Downtown Chicago. In their wait, the two took a romantic stroll in Palos Verdes, CA for a very intimate oceanside engagement session.
Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal!
It was July 14th, 2013 and I was sitting outside of Le Pain, a Belgian cafe in LA. I had met a guy online and we were about to have our first date. I was starting to have second thoughts about meeting him. I got a text from him that he was running late. When I looked up from my phone, I saw a tall African king standing over me. He was so attractive and masculine. It was Ade. He asked if the seat next to me was taken and I said yes. He sat down anyway. He introduced himself, showered me with endless compliments, and made me laugh. I was smitten with Ade. We exchanged numbers and said goodbye. I almost forgot about the guy who was running late for our first date. I still don’t remember his name. By the time he arrived, my heart was already taken.
Ade and I were on a trip with about 20 of our close friends last January in the Dominican Republic. One night, Ade took my hand and asked me to pray with him. I was exhausted and my feet were in pain from dancing in 4 inch heels all night. I initially hesitated because my body was tired, but you can never be too tired for God so I said, “Yes, of course, baby. Let’s pray.” So we kneeled down and Ade prayed. He prayed an individual prayer for every person we knew. Then I heard him say, “Dear Lord, I want to thank you for one last person. You blessed me with the most beautiful and caring woman I have ever met, Kim Patrick. I want to know if she will spend the rest of her life with me.” I opened my eyes and he was holding a sparkling diamond ring. That was the happiest moment of my life.
The engagement session…
We planned our engagement shoot overlooking the sea outside of the Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes, California. We wanted an engagement shoot that was near the ocean. We both love the water and since we are getting married on the beach next year, we thought it was the perfect place. We were so blown away with the amazing shots Chris created for us. It is hard to believe we are the first couple he has done an engagement photo shoot for.
What did you do on your first date?
On our first date, Ade combined two of my favorite things. He took me to Lighthouse Cafe. It’s a laid-back hole-in-the-wall restaurant/lounge right on the beach that has a live reggae band. We ate jerk chicken, danced, and talked for hours. Neither one of us wanted the night to end.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
Lately we have really been into binge watching drama TV series. The plots are so captivating. We get enthralled and end up watching 10 episodes back to back. Right now, we’re watching Luther and Game of Thrones.
How has wedding planning been so far?
Planning is going quite well for us, but we’re starting to feel the heat. There’s only four months before the big day and it feels like there is so much left to do.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.
Right now, we are most excited about our first dance. We can’t wait to surprise our guests with our smooth moves.
