On the campus of Salem State College during Sophomore year, Jasmine and Chimel’s love blossomed after casually crossing paths by way of mutual friends. Starting first as friends, their love for each other naturally developed as quickly as their beating hearts when together. It wasn’t long before Chimel began thinking of their perfect proposal; a rooftop garden under the stars of New York City. A most cherished wedding memory is having all the closest people in their lives dancing and celebrating their love…

Wedding location: Lyman Estate, Waltham Massachusetts
How did you meet? We met very casually through friends at Salem State College, during our sophomore year. We started off as friends who blossomed over time.
Tell us about the proposal.
The proposal was sweet and private. We were in NYC for a friend’s 30th birthday party. Chimel initially planned to pop the question at the party, but changed his mind; he wanted it to be more intimate. After the party we were out for dinner in the city. Jasmine fell asleep in the car while Chimel nervously drove around and searched for an alternate location to pop the question. He chose the perfect spot. On a grass filled rooftop along the NYC wharf underneath the stars. As Jasmine was taking selfies (of course) he placed the ring in one of her shots. As she sat up to look at the photo she took, Chimel took a knee surprising her completely. Of course she said YES!
Describe your wedding style. Our wedding style could be described as romantic and elegant. The venue we chose was a Historic Victorian Home and we wanted to play on the beauty of the venue while adding our own urban flare. I wore a form fitting dress with subtle lace accents, with lace & pearl draped over my shoulders adding more detail to the classic but modern feel of the dress. It was all finished it off with a pair of unique gold python embossed pumps. Chimel wore a classic “metallic denim” double breasted suit with a three-button double-breasted vest underneath. He coupled it with a soft pink shirt and burgundy tie, and finished it with a rose gold watch and cuff-links.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Chimel’s family is West African and we had a traditional celebration a few weeks before our wedding. The women in his family wore traditional African attire. No traditional rituals were incorporated in this particular wedding.
Wedding party gifts: Bridesmaids received an earring & bracelet set to wear on the wedding day. Each came with personalized messages from the Bride. Groomsmen received vintage pocket watches with their names engraved on it.
Ceremony entrance song: Bridal Party entered to “Superpower” by Beyonce & Frank Ocean; Jasmine entered to a saxophonist rendition of “Prototype” by Outkast.
First dance song: “Until the End of Time” by Justin Timberlake
What is your best memory from your wedding? Best Memory has to be the party! With Chimel being a DJ, dancing and having fun with our friends is something we do often. But to have all the closest people, family and friends, dancing and celebrating our love was extra special. Chimel handpicked two DJs that he trusted for our special day who kept us “turned up” until the end.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Our best advice is to do what YOU want. There are so many people who will give unwarranted advice, you as a couple must be able to sift through it all and choose what works for you. Do what makes you happy. Do not feel the need to do anything “traditional” or standard. We changed so many things that others didn’t agree with, including parents, vendors, and wedding party. But at the end of the day we were 100% pleased with the outcome of our wedding.
