Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. I planned a joint birthday party with a friend who also happened to be friends with Frank. He planned to attend and asked my former roommate, in advance, to introduce us the night of the event. We had our first date at a small Thai restaurant in Hoboken shortly thereafter. The night before the proposal, Frank took me back to the same restaurant. The following morning, while driving toward one of our favorite brunch restaurants, he pulled the car over to stop at a small pier overlooking a lake. While strolling along the pier, I realized our conversation had become a monologue. I turned and found Frank several feet behind me, on bended knee. I said yes, of course, and we celebrated at brunch.
What was wedding shopping like for you? Wedding dress shopping was enjoyable bonding time for me and my mom. I am very particular, so it took a little time to find a style I fell in love with. I had a style in mind and had an artist render an illustration, based on my vision, of Frank and I before I found my dress. Side by side comparisons of the illustration and our wedding photos are impressive. My wedding dress was a heavily beaded mermaid style dress.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Frank was born in Ghana. Hence, we tied a lot of cultural music into our traditional wedding on Saturday. On Sunday, we held a separate Thanksgiving church service, followed by a kente cloth reception. The second reception played all cultural music and served Ghanaian food.
Bridesmaids/Groomsmen gifts: The bridesmaids each received a bamboo hand fan, a custom t-shirt, a robe, jewelry, and an engraved rose gold flask. The groomsmen received custom duffle bags.
Favorite item on the menu: Stuffed red snapper
First Dance Song: “You and I” by John Legend
What is your best memory from your wedding? My best memory from my wedding was when “Swag Surf” was played and nearly the entire group of guests came to the dance floor. The energy was electrifying! We were surrounded by our friends, many of whom are doctors, lawyers, and engineers, dressed in tuxedos and gowns, and doing the swag surf like we were back at a college party.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Take time to enjoy engagement and wedding planning – the phase in your relationship is transient, so absorb every moment.
