Lillian and Justin’s love story began on Instagram. More than a little intrigued by each other’s images, they quickly got to know more about each other through direct messaging – where it was clear they shared much in common. Their first meeting set them on the path to together forever. And on July 8th they were joined as husband and wife in a beautiful, traditional Ghanaian ceremony in Ontario, Canada.

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. We met on Instagram – Lillian slid into Justin’s DMs… For the proposal, after Lillian was hospitalized for having a pulmonary Embolism, the couple decided they didn’t want to wait much longer to get married. A few months later Justin took Lillian on a walk in their neighborhood in Los Angeles to the LACMA Museum, where he took her to a café. As they were eating dessert Justin got down on one knee and proposed.
Describe your wedding attire. We wanted to have a traditional Ghanaian ceremony and skipped the white wedding since we already did a civil ceremony. A lot of the items we wore were all from Ghana. We really wanted to celebrate our culture. All of the brides dresses were designs by Claude Lavie Kameni of Lavie By CK. Both the bride and groom’s first outfit was hand-stitched in Ghana by Kente Royale. For the reception look we wanted to celebrate Ghana being the gold coast of African so we dressed in all gold.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Our entire wedding had items from Ghana including the guest favors which we purchased from Nokware Skincare, an organic beauty company. The groomsmen’s traditional ceremony attire were made by K.Spio and all the cloth was sourced form Ghana.
Wedding Party Gifts: We gave our bridesmaids personalized robes, earrings and handmade cards that had Ankara infused in it. The guys were all gifted custom K. Spio shirts.
First dance song: “Get You” by Daniel Cesar, feat. Kali Uchis
What is your best memory from your wedding? Our first dance was our favorite, because it was the moment everything kind of slowed down and got to take in that we were married. We also loved taking photos in our custom photobooth by Dunnie the Artist and Snap at 6ix. Also LOVED our dessert table and cake by Cake Your Way in Toronto.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Do things your way. Everyone has their thoughts on how your wedding should go, but you have to make sure your planning a wedding you’ll both love.
