Jenna and Derrick’s love story epitomizes that quintessential Spelhouse romance we only hear about through friends connected to the HBCU’s. They met in August of 2007, Derrick was the football captain at Morehouse when Jenna transferred to Spelman and had just made the school’s cheerleading team. “We were both attending our separate sports camps and I had a huge ice pack up to my eye from a stunt we had been practicing. While on a short water break he called me over to him and made small talk about my eye and eventually asked me for my phone number before the conversation ended,” Jenna shares. It was the first time she’d given her real number to anyone all year and like one of her favorite quotes, she fell in love with him like you fall asleep…slowly, then all at once.

Describe your wedding dress and your shopping experience.
My wedding dress was ballroom chic. It was a two piece dress. There was a mini dress underneath the ball gown skirt. The top part of the dress (the mini dress) was all lace with a sweetheart neckline. The bottom of the dress (the skirt) was so elegant and long. It was all tulle and had a thick horsehair trim around the bottom (I also got my veil made to match). I had a gorgeous rhinestone belt that set the whole dress off and I absolutely felt like a princess when I had that dress on. Shopping was such a pleasant experience. I made a couple of appointments at a few places, but my 1st stop, 3rd dress was “the dress”. I didn’t need to see anything else after that.
What is your best memory from your wedding day?
One of my best memories is our 1st dance. It was the 1st time in all our years together Derrick didn’t care about “PDA”. He sang the whole song (John Legend’s You & I) in my ear the whole time and it felt as though all the love in the room was engulfing us and only us and we were unconditionally and irrevocably in love with each other.
What advice would you give to our brides-to-be?
The best advice I have is to start planning the venue as soon as possible because dates get picked very quickly and you need time to do your research and find the “right” place for you. Also, don’t let anyone else dictate what you do. Do what you want to do for your wedding and if people don’t want to help or aren’t involved as they should be do it yourself!
