Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. Vincent and I met through a mutual friend in 2012 at a New Year’s Eve party in Atlanta, GA. He and I, along with two other friends performed Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison.” We were absolutely horrible performers. We were uncoordinated and off key, but it was the most fun I’ve ever had performing karaoke. From that point on, it was as if Vincent and I were on our very first date. We had to have like ten other people in our group but it felt as if it was just he and I. Our group left the hotel party and grabbed a bite to eat at Taco Mac where Vincent joked that I should pick up his tab. We’ve been together ever since!
Vincent proposed on December 3rd, 2016. I was working late in lab and Vincent called and said he needed me to meet him at my apartment. I rushed over as soon as I could. Because Vincent is a music producer, I often listen to his beats and give him my honest feedback. Once I arrived to my apartment, Vincent insisted that I sit and listen to his latest creation through headphones. I sat down and began listening. I then realized I was watching a personalized video with a song detailing highlights of our relationship. Once the song ended, I looked over and Vincent was on one knee. It was such a beautiful moment.
Describe your engagement session. The engagement session was an ode to the proposal video and song. Towards the end of the video, Vincent says “I’m tryna be old like 60 or 70 in Walmart in our matching jogging suits on just swishing through the isles…not picking up anything….just tryna get out the house.” We wanted to get matching jumpsuits. We have always been an unorthodox couple and so we wanted a photo session that reflected us and Somi delivered.
What did you do on your first date? Our first date was awkward. It was 3 months after the New Year’s Eve party and we picked a halfway point between Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia because we were in different states at the time. We had dinner at Fatz café and got to know one another a little more.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple? Our favorite thing to do as a couple is try new foods. We’re foodies and so we like trying new restaurants and diners and things of that nature.
How has wedding planning been so far? Wedding planning in the beginning was stressful but I feel we have all of the major components under control.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day. We’re looking forward to making our relationship “official-official” in the presence of family and friends…ultimately knowing that we’ll be spending the rest of our lives together.
