If Melanin was an event this event would definitely be it!
Author Istene Gelin Kennedy wanted to highlight “black girl magic” for her 33rd birthday celebration, so she paid homage to Melanin with a glamorous party. She shares, “Everything from the decor to the attire for the event was focused on one word Melanin. We picked different shades of nude to represent melanin in every shade and black because we all know black is king!”
Her girls ate a delicious menu of Philly egg rolls, parmesan-crusted chicken, and red velvet fried Oreos as they had enlightening conversations about being black women in America. And, to top off an amazing night, each guest received a copy of Istene’s book “Indulgence.”

What was the theme for the shower/party?
For this event we wanted to hight light black girl magic. Everything from the decor to the attire for the event was focused on one word Melanin. It’s important especially now more than ever that we as Queens uplight each other. We picked different shades of nude to represent melanin in every shade and black because we all know black is king! It really was the perfect pop of color.

The food was absolutely amazing. Chef L.A did a great job with the menu, which consisted of chicken Philly egg rolls for appetizers, garden salads with the chef’s signature sauce, and Miso salmon and Parmesan crusted chicken over garlic rosemary mash potatoes. For dessert guests were served red velvet fried Oreos.
Did you all play any fun games?
We had a round table discussion on relevant topics that affect us as black women. We discussed careers, goals, love, marriage, and all the many roles that we as women have to play.
What entertainment was present at the party?
We enjoyed listening to great music as we talked over dinner.
What was the most memorable moment of the shower/party?
The most memorable moment had to be the time spent with close friends and family. We often take the simplest things for granted. So the time spent together was worth every second.
