On how the couple met…
“I spent a great deal of summer 2008 seeking a better relationship with God. I began to tell God everything I visualized in the guy I would spend the rest of my life with. I stated all I needed in a husband: patience, intelligence, a leader, accepting of my spirituality, and a man who had a personal relationship with God. Then I began to pray for the things I simple wanted: brown beautiful skin, an amazing smile, and a sociable personality (I was told to always be specific in what I ask for). I prayed that overall he would help me to be a better person! I met Trev, approximately two in half weeks after this prayer. His best friend, Carl Leblanc, had been dating one of my friends; the two wanted to introduce us. I politely declined a time or two, but they were persistent in wanting us to meet. I hesitantly agreed. Trev drove to Baton Rouge to meet me for the first time that day. Despite my unwillingness to admit or show I was interested in him, my feelings intensified with every second we were together. Afterwards, I found myself fighting my emotions because I felt there was no way I had this feeling after a couple days. I decided to call my mom that week and I asked her ‘How did you know Dad was the one?’ She replied ‘You just know’. I then said ‘Mom I think he is the one. It is something different about him that I have never felt.’ We laughed and nearly cried. Trev and I continued the long-distance friendship which later blossomed into a beautiful romance.”
Growing from friends to lovers, the couple revealed what made them fall in love with each other….
“I fell in love with Trev because he has the biggest heart. It sounds cliché’ but it’s true. He is the type of person to open doors for strangers, pull out chairs, and do all the small things that matter. His ability to put himself last with people is a characteristic that could never go unnoticed. Trev is definitely a gentleman. He brings home flowers just because! He cooks, cleans, and does everything necessary to balance our relationship. Most of all Trev knows how to love me. He allows me to be the daring, over-the-top, drama-filled person that I am. The things that I strive to [do] better, he helps me because he exudes it all! He accepts and loves my flaws because he realizes these things make me who I am.” – Mhykee
Mhykee reminded me of my mama, Serina. Just being tough, strong-minded and
about ‘their business’, not to mention beautiful inside and out. The saying goes that two people who are alike don’t usually get along, but once I introduced them, they loved each other. My brothers and friends liked her as well. I knew Mhykee would one day be my wife. As time passed, we grew closer and my love began to grow for her. I started
to think about marriage! Looking into the future, I could not imagine my life without her; every time I tried she was still there! I felt that was a sign from God that I needed to make it official by purchasing the ring! With God, my mom, family, and friends giving me the approval, I knew it was destined to be!” – Trev
That is an absolutely beautiful testament to their love. However, sometimes, the beginnings of love do not always translate into the conviction that a couple is destined to be together forever. For Mhykee and Trev, their love was enough.
On knowing Trev was “the one”…
“When I met Trev, I was not the nicest person to him. On the first night, I aggressively stated what my expectations were for a relationship. I figured there was no point in wasting time. I had been alone for quite a while, and I had had my share of disappointments. I was not ready to do that again! I figured I had run him off from the intense conversation, but the next day he called. And the day after that! He kept calling and he wanted to spend time with me. I tried my best not to show any affection! I am not the type to fall quickly for any guy but I guess you can say Trev swept me of my feet. I
opened up to him about things that I had never told ANYONE!”
On knowing Mhykee was the one…
I remember the long talks in the hallway and closet of Mhykee’s apartment. She spilled out all of her feelings and filled me in on her past. She then described what she wanted her future to be. Mhykee felt like I was the last piece to her puzzle. Little did she know she was the piece to mine as well. That showed she trusted me and that’s what I love about her: honesty and trust. We were on the same [page] from day one. We both loved basketball and fashion. We had so many things in common. Her honesty and trust left me with no choice but to fall in love. That’s how I knew she was the one!”
Now certain that this was the woman for him for the rest of his life, Trev proposed.
On the Proposal….
“In 2009, on Christmas Day, Trev and I had traveled to Shreveport to visit my family. That morning, I noticed that it seemed something was on his mind. He did not say much so I let him be. I saw him and my dad talking in the kitchen but that was nothing out of the ordinary. My cousin and I were getting dressed for the day when Trev called
me into the living room. He stood smiling in the center of the floor. On the table were three boxes; I still had not figured out what was going on. Trev began to hand me the boxes starting with the smallest one. He then began to explain that the box represented our past. He further said that he had been looking for love and etc. There were several pictures of us before we had met one another. Then he handed me the next box which was a bit bigger than the first. In this box were pictures of the two of us. There were also pictures of the baby we lost several months before. Trev told me that this box represented our present; he told me how grateful he was to have me and how much he loved me. By this time I could hardly breathe, I realized my parents were in the room and his brother
Carl was recording the entire thing! Trev then handed me the largest box. It represented our future. In this box was a picture of our families. The very last picture was a ring. When I looked up, Trev was on one knee. He told me that he never wanted to be without me and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes and the rest is history.”
Creative, thoughtful and romantic :) Now engaged, the couple decided to have an engagement session; but finding the right photographer is everything!
On selecting Kelly Cathey…
Kelly Cathey was the very first photographer that I found in the Shreveport area via web. For one reason or another, I continued my search. Months later, I prayed that God take over every aspect of my wedding… Not long after, my planner told me I had to make a decision on a photographer. She also had someone she wanted to recommend…it was KELLY CATHEY. After meeting with her, we just clicked. She is so high spirited and there is never a dull moment. [Even] my mom noticed the instant connection between the two of us! We are so much alike in so many ways. One thing in particular is that she thinks the sky was one of God’s greatest creations and as irrelevant as it may sound, that’s what I have always said. My favorite thing in the world is God’s beautiful colored sky as the sun sets!” -Mhykeisha
Nothing beats finding the perfect photographer, especially when that photographer is a kindred spirit. Their wonderful connection showed in every image of the e-session. For their engagement session, Mhykee and Trev knew that they wanted a vintage theme, just like they wanted for the wedding. Both fashion enthusiasts, the session was so much fun for them…”The first look (Black and white) was to incorporate the wedding colors. It’s amazing how Trev and I are so much alike. I told him my vision, bought my attire, and before I knew it he had his outfit to coordinate. It was perfect! With this look we wanted to do the traditional vintage – nothing too over-the-top, but enough to show our personality…With the second (floral) look, we wanted the upscale/more fancy side of vintage. I was definitely inspired by 1940’s era. The women wore knee length dresses and gorgeous hats…With this session, we had a ball letting go for the camera. The last session (cream and white), we thought of our mothers. We knew they would like the creativity of our other clothing options, but every mom needs those REAL engagement photos to show all her friends…we didn’t let the clothes speak so much, but rather our LOVE for one another. No characters, dramatic colors, or themes- just us!”
They pulled the looks off fabulously! Of course, anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows that it’s certainly not all fun and games, but Mhykee seems to be taking it in stride
On the most challenging part of planning…
“I really haven’t had any major challenges. I put this wedding in God’s hands long ago and I have realized through patience, it is all coming together more perfectly than I could ever imagine.”
On the most exciting part of planning…
“Just planning! I realize I am a real bride. Two months away from my wedding and it still hits me every day that I am really planning MY wedding! The most exciting thing is I have found the guy of my dreams that was created just for me and everything comes second to that!”
Well-said, Mhykee. As for what she looks forward to most on her wedding day, her answer is simple, “Happiness! Growing up, I always said ‘I just want to be happy’. No gimmicks, monetary gifts, or temporary satisfaction but true happiness. I know this day will be what I have been longing for since I was a small girl. The privilege to share our beginning with our friends and family is priceless. I am patiently waiting for our day to arrive!”
We wish Mhykee and Trev all the happiness in the world as they plan to begin the journey of a lifetime.
