As you can tell, Munaluchi is all about the celebration of love and romance between couples. For us, the best love stories happen every day in real life. However, it is undeniable that love stories on television and in movies often inspire. So, we present this new section which periodically highlights one memorable TV/Movie moment in which we, as spectators, celebrated true love.
Today’s installment of “Love and Television” is dedicated to the television show that changed the game, “The Game” (no pun intended).
We met Melanie “Med School” Barnett, the beautiful and loyal girlfriend, who left a chance at an Ivy League medical education to follow her boyfriend and the love of her life, Derwin “Ding Dong” Davis, to San Diego in order to support his growing career as a football player. Her parents hate him, her cousin thinks she’s making an unwise decision and she does not fit in with the Sun Beams; yet, Melanie is determined to support Derwin.
Through the rollercoaster of their lives, including many sweet and hilarious moments, deep hurt and disappointments, broken trusts and betrayal, breaking up and making up, and the growth of new friendships, among other things, “The Game” takes us into a world that is more real than that of many fictional stories. We are reminded that real life is complicated, complex and messy; that things don’t always work out how we want them to; and that failure is only that if we don’t rise up and try again.
My favorite season of the show, Season 3, had a perfect but realistic end. Just as Melanie’s parents finally consent to her marriage to Derwin (who they hate) and the couple is about to be joined in holy matrimony, we watch in disappointed amazement as Derwin has to rush off to the hospital for the delivery of the son he will be having with ex-girlfriend, Janay. Finally, though, their love conquers it all when Derwin and Melanie finally (!!!) get married in the hospital chapel.
My favorite things about the season’s end? The absolutely perfect music: Melanie walked down the aisle to Lisa Tucker’s (who played Malik’s recently-discovered sister) wonderfully beautiful “I Am For You”. Then, the couple finally got married with John Legend’s “This Time” playing in the background. Couldn’t be more perfect.
Enjoy the music and take some time to reminisce, and then, remember that though we need to make the very best decisions, life can really get messy but real love (not a fairy tale…lol) conquers all of it! Happy Loving!
