Wedding Couple: NaKeila and Renita
Wedding date: July 15, 2017
Wedding Location: Dallas, Texas
For NaKeila and Renita, it was divine order that brought them together, hiring them to the same company at the same time – and destiny that allowed them to work on the same company team. As teammates, they got to know each other and quickly became good friends. Though they were fast friends the true chapters of their love story wouldn’t begin until a few years later, after NaKeila had moved on from the company. It was late spring of 2007 when they ran into each other while out on the town. Their friendship rekindled and with it followed the sparks of romance. They began talking often and spending more and more time together, deepening the feelings for each other, until before long they were officially a couple.
Renita knew that NaKeila was “the one” when, in her words, “my number one priority became respecting and protecting our love.” For Renita, the first time she ever saw NaKeila her entire world stopped for a minute – it was love at first sight. So by this point in their relationship Renita definitely knew that she wanted to spend the rest of her life with NaKeila, and so began planning her perfect proposal. She planned a surprise proposal for NaKeila on her birthday trip to La Jolla, California.
They spend the week exploring the city and taking in the beautiful ocean views. By the day of her actual birthday, NaKeila just wanted to relax, so Renita went with the flow and followed her wishes – but that meant she had to switch up the entire proposal plan. They had a laidback afternoon followed by a romantic dinner. The proposal was postponed, following another magical evening together, Renita looked into the eyes of NaKeila, the love of her life, and asked for her hand in marriage.
Nakeila knew Renita was “the one” when she earned and honored her trust by being a loyal friend, a positive force in her life, and by loving her as deeply as she loves her.
Their intimate ceremony took place in a chic, contemporary space overlooking the Dallas skyline. The wedding style was inspired by exquisite African details, incorporating Ankara fabrics, tribal markings, and Cowrie shells. The bridal party wore all-white attire with African accents, and guests chose purple flowers and lighting to represent royalty. NaKeila looked stunning in a custom designed two-piece mermaid dress with sweetheart neckline and cowrie shell embellishments, and Renita was fabulous in a custom designed two-piece bateau top with cowrie shell accents and high-waisted pants – complete with detachable princess tulle skirt with couture flower detail.

Best Memories: NaKeila – “My best memory from our wedding was when Renita’s sorority sisters serenaded her for the Delta Sigma Theta ‘Sweetheart Song.’” Renita – “My best memory was our first look! I remember standing there and feeling excited and anxious as I heard NaKeila walk down the steps. When I turned around and saw her standing there looking like a true Queen it took my breath away.”
Advice for Engaged Couples: “Trying to force traditions didn’t work for us and so we were deliberate about having a ceremony and reception that represented who we are. Decide what wedding traditions are meaningful to you and what new traditions you want to create for yourself. Prioritize things that matter to you as a couple — not what others expect. Enjoy every moment because it goes by fast. Take pictures with all of your guests. And go on a honeymoon.”
