While attending the Munaluchi Bridal City 2 City New Jersey Tour stop, Chevonese and Michael won the complimentary engagement session that was given away at the event! The happy couple has saved the date for an intimate July 2, 2016 wedding in Kenilworth, NJ.
Inspired by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, a couple these two agree are a great representation of the epitome of black-love, these two took to Princeton University for their engagement session. More on their inspiration and what led to the proposal seven years after meeting below!
Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal!
We first met in April of 2008. It was a Wednesday night and my best friend and I were planning a fashion show. We had just had such a great practice that we decided to go to the lounge down the street to celebrate. I still had on my work clothes so I only intended to stay for a few minutes. At the end of the night, as I was waiting for my friend to get ready to leave, Michael stopped me and asked for my number.
Fast forward seven years later, we were celebrating my grandparents’ 56th wedding anniversary in their backyard with family and friends. Before it was time to cut cake, several people congratulated my grandparents on their anniversary and gave well wishes. Michael was the last to congratulate them and during his speech, he stated how much I talk about how my grandparents set the foundation. He also mentioned how I always questioned us being together that long. At this point I’m looking at him like “Where is he going with this speech?” Then he said, “How can we get married if we’re not engaged?” That’s when he went down on one knee and asked me to marry him. At least that’s what I think he said because after he went down on one knee, I started crying like a baby!
The engagement session…
Our theme was the future Wilsons channel the Obamas. We even shot the session at Princeton where Michelle Obama went to school. Just a few weeks before the engagement session, everyone on social media was talking about the Obamas state dinner photos. So our photographer, Nana, came up with the theme which was on point! It was great to recreate the Obamas but put our own twist to it. Nana did a awesome job capturing the theme.
What did you do on your first date?
Our first date was two days after we met. It was a beautiful day so we ended up going to Cold Stone Creamery. We ate ice cream on the bench and talked for hours. That’s when we learned we both went to an HBCU. Michael went to Bethune Cookman and I went to Morgan State. So from the beginning there was a connection.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
We love to travel and every year we go to Michael’s alma mater’s homecoming game and meet up with friends in Daytona.
How has wedding planning been so far?
The wedding planning process has been exciting so far. I started planning the very next day after the proposal! It’s exciting coming up with creative ways to execute our wedding.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.
I look forward to becoming Michael’s wife, of course, and to build our foundation as The Wilsons.
