MunaLuchi Bride’s Contributing Fashion Writer and Critic, Marie Deborah Smith, gives her take on this year’s Oscars ceremony.
The 2023 Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles left me wanting more drama and iconic Oscar fashion moments that went uncharacteristically missing this year.
Every year, Tinseltown gets dolled up with its over-the-top finery as style watchers wait with anticipation to see who wore what and why. This time on the red carpet something seemed different. The ceremony felt different.
Stars like Halle Bailey, Kate Beckinsale, and Angela Bassett among others, continued to hold the line with sensational looks. Trends like exposed corsets, pretty cotton candy-colored spring pastels, and metallics still dominated. Showing skin was still in with two extravagant looks from Ciara and Hunter Schafer at the Vanity Fair party.
Why was I a bit disappointed?
Because fashion is pure escapism and the Oscars have always been the portal away from real life to a world of champagne wishes and caviar dreams (some of you may get that reference later). Maybe many of us were waiting with bated breath for a Celine Dion or Bjork viral moment that never materialized.
While there were some exceptions, for the most part, the multitude of celebs played it safe this year. Call me an old-fashioned millennial, but my gut reaction looking at the parade of gowns floating down the red carpet at the ceremony and after parties was a big ole sigh.
I wanted someone who wasn’t seeking perfection but a bit of personality. Someone who had the utter gall to wear something ridiculous but memorable. Maybe Heidi Klum came close this year with her Georges Hobeika couture gown, but time will tell. Hopefully, next year someone will do something iconic and not play it so safe!
My award for best dressed this year goes to Savannah James and Deepika Padukone.
Simple opulence won the night’s biggest award with Savannah wearing a white Sergio Hudson floor-length figure-hugging mermaid silhouette and Deepika dressed in a black Louis Vitton gown in the same silhouette but with matching opera gloves. Both dresses were stunningly beautiful and are fantastically flattering bridal silhouettes.
Take a look below at some of the stars that kept the glam going at the official ceremony and Vanity Fair after party.
