Pilar and Vincent first met in 2012 when they were introduced to each other by two of Pilar’s friends. Pilar hadn’t thought much about the interaction because her friends had already introduced him to half of their church. She was certain he wouldn’t remember her. Little did she know they would have a future together as husband and wife. They quickly became friends and started spending more and more time together. During the fall of 2016, Vincent proposed.

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. Vincent and Pilar met on August 12, 2012 at Vine Church in Carbondale, Illinois, Pilar’s hometown and where Vincent completed his masters program. Pilar’s friends Abigail and Sara, who actually leased Vincent his apartment, introduced them to each other. Pilar didn’t really want to be bothered because she knew those two had already introduced him to about half the church, and he wouldn’t remember her. This is true because a few weeks later at a Labor Day BBQ Vincent recalled, “I remembered her face but could not remember her name.” Regardless, they hit it off and quickly became friends. They spent time together whenever their busy schedules allowed it.
In the fall of 2016, Pilar moved to New York City to work and be closer to Vincent as he had decided to put roots down there. On November 18, 2016 Vincent surprised Pilar with a flashmob performance of “You’re Never Ever Gettin Rid of Me” from Waitress the Musical. He had secretly rehearsed the dance with friends and arranged for the big moment to take place on stage after the young adults meeting at their church. He even got her three best friends to fly in from Chicago as the cherry on top of this sweet gesture. Pilar joyfully responded HALE YES!
Describe your engagement session. Our engagement session was in the evening on the steps of Brooklyn Public Library. We didn’t really have a specific theme in mind but we like to call it The Red Carpet shoot. DRAMA. GLAM. MAFIOSO. We were going for shock and awe and Gerald delivered! That red dress was EVERYTHING and Gerald was able to capture the true essence of our individual personalities and our love for one another.
What did you do on your first date? Vincent recalls their first date being dinner at Bandanas, a local barbecue spot in Carbondale. However, Pilar didn’t think she was on a date because they hadn’t officially classified it as such. She considers their first date to be a lunch date to McAlister’s Deli before they traveled to Chicago to celebrate her birthday.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple? We love going to the movies together. We like the challenge of finding movies that will keep our interest, so much so Vincent won’t fall asleep in the theatre.
How has wedding planning been so far? We have had a lot of ups and downs, challenges and changes but things have finally evened out. We originally planned on a short engagement but as time got closer and closer we realized we needed more time to plan and prepare for the wedding and more importantly, life after the wedding. We are looking forward to our big day and the happily ever after to follow!
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on your wedding day. (Pilar) On on our wedding day, I’m looking forward to seeing Vincent’s face when I walk down the aisle. (Vincent) I’m most excited about the pictures and video to capture the moments we will be too busy smiling, laughing and dancing to notice.
