When these two first met at Florida A&M University in 2014, it didn’t take long for them to realize they had a lot in common. For one, they were both going to school to become pharmacists. They also enjoyed trying new foods and activities together. While their program was challenging, their strong friendship carried them through. Austin asked Jamekia to be his girlfriend during Clinical week and after graduating, both officially Doctors of Pharmacy, their relationship blossomed! Fast forward to Jamekia’s 30th birthday vacation trip, Austin proposed – of course, she said yes!
I kneeled on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked her to spend forever with me. She made me the happiest man in the world when she said yes.

How they met…
Austin and I met at Florida A & M University in 2014 when we started pharmacy school together. A couple of weeks after school started, we became friends. It did not take us long to realize we had a lot in common. We started doing everything together from studying long nights in the library to trying new restaurants around town. He became one of my best friends. We encouraged and motivated each other throughout the program.
While we were completing our clinical rotations, Austin asked me to become his girlfriend. He was placed in Miami for his clinical rotations and I was in Tampa so our relationship was long-distance until we graduated. We graduated on May 5, 2018, from the illustrious Florida A & M University as a couple and Doctors of Pharmacy.
Their first date…
Our first date was on Valentine’s Day. We love going to new restaurants, so we decided to try a nice fondue restaurant downtown. It was so much fun. We spent the entire night talking, laughing, and enjoying the food.
The proposal…
We planned a trip last summer to a luxury resort in St. Lucia for Jamekia’s 30th Birthday. She had no idea I was also in contact with them planning the proposal. Jamekia is very hard to surprise, so I had to be careful. The trickiest part was packing all the supplies I was giving the resort to set up without her noticing. There were a few close calls like my suitcase being exactly at the 50-pound limit. If my suitcase weighed a single pound more, I would have had to open my bag and the surprise would have been ruined. But luckily, I was able to check my luggage without a problem. Jamekia didn’t have the slightest idea. She just kept asking “Why is your suitcase so heavy?”.
After we arrived at the resort, we prepared for the private oceanside dinner I had arranged for her birthday. Surprisingly, she still did not suspect anything. That night, we headed over to the cabana where our dinner would be held. When she approached the cabana and saw the glowing “Marry Me” sign the tears of joy started right away. I kneeled on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked her to spend forever with me. She made me the happiest man in the world when she said yes.
When they knew they found “the one”…
When we were in school, we became inseparable. We studied together, stressed together about exams, and motivated each other to finish the program. We missed each other when we were apart and enjoyed our moments together. Upon graduating, we knew we did not want to pursue life without having one another.
Engagement session & theme…
We did not have a specific theme but we knew we wanted our photoshoot to look classy and elegant. We spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect place to shoot. A few of the venues we considered were not allowing photoshoots due to COVID-19. So, we decided to ask our photographer for recommendations. Once we explained our vision, they immediately suggested the Howey Mansion. The venue was not far from where we live and once we saw it for ourselves we were sold. The mansion was beautiful. For the photoshoot, we were limited to one hour. Their closing time was 5:00pm which was when our shoot would end, and I had an outfit change so we were pressed for time. I was nervous the entire day leading up to the shoot because I wanted our pictures to be perfect.
Upon arrival, we mapped out the mansion, put on our NBA YoungBoy tunes, and everything just started to flow. We had a great time shooting and Frantz our photographer was awesome. He made us feel comfortable with shooting and helped us capture the perfect photos. We ended up going over our time limit, but by that time the manager at the mansion had also joined in the fun too. She was helping us find all the best spots and poses for our pictures, so she didn’t mind us going over our time limit a little bit. Overall, we are ecstatic with the way our photos turned out and how we were able to showcase our love for each other in each shot.
Favorite thing to do as a couple…
There are very few things we love as much as traveling and eating. Jamekia always jokes about our love language being food. We love to eat and experience different types of cuisine as a couple. Whenever we can find free time on the weekends, we look for different restaurants to try. We have also traveled all over the world as a couple. We like to have new adventures that we would not have if we stayed home.
Wedding planning so far…
The wedding planning has been great so far, we have booked most of our vendors. And we have a great wedding planner, Tica, that has been helping us with coordinating everything. It is definitely a whole lot of work and planning but we have been enjoying every bit of it. We cannot wait to see the result of it all.
What they’re looking forward to most on their wedding day…
Finally getting to say “I do” to each other. So much planning has gone into making this our perfect day. We are ready to share our big moment with all of our closest family and friends as we bring in the next era of our relationship. And of course, we are ready for the turn-up!
