Real {Detroit} Wedding: Carla + Richard

When Carla met Richard during his visit to her church, she invited him to revisit the church instead of giving him her phone number. She was really expecting him to show up again – but he did. He’s been showing up for her ever since.

The Meeting …. “Todd and I met in January of 2009 when he visited my church for an officer installation ceremony. He made small talk and asked for my contact information. Instead of passing off my number, I invited him back to service. Well to my surprise, about three weeks later I received a hand written note with a stick figure that read “I’m here.”  It was the most corny thing I’d ever received, but began a beautiful friendship.”

The Proposal …. “Fast forward to April of 2010, we began dating and on February 27th, 2011 at my church (where it all began) Todd pulled off a surprise proposal – everyone, from our families to my pastor, was involved. At the conclusion of service, Charlie Wilson’s [song] ‘You Are’ began playing and Todd was at the altar. He motioned for me to come down and, in front of the entire church and both families represented, he asked for my hand in marriage.”

The Planning Process & The Theme …. “We went with a Vintage Garden theme.  Wedding colors were inspired by our favorite colors purple (mine) and orange (his). Todd has a keen interest in history which played a major factor in the wedding (Indian Village Centennial Garden) and reception (The Colony Club) locations. Seeing as we had roughly three months to plan, stress was a factor. To ease some of the burden, we hired a day-of coordinator who assisted with tasks prior to the ceremony and doubled as florist. Both of Todd’s parents have [passed], but we were sure to incorporate them [into our ceremony] with white long-stem roses on the front row.”

The Most Memorable Moment …. “Running through a nursing home to surprise my great-aunt immediately following the wedding ceremony. Having been in and out of intensive care units and facing serious health issues, we knew much she desired to be apart of our special day.  On top of it all, as we ran to her room it seemed like the entire floor ran behind us. When we finally arrived to her door staff, patients, and visitors were cheering and clapping. Love was truly in the air!”
