Tamarah and Steve’s love story first began on the campus of the University of Notre Dame in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. In Tamarah’s words, “we did not notice each other until I saw a handsome man standing in front of the college after class…” After later telling her friend that “Steve looks like my boyfriend without even talking to him,” Tamarah realized that they shared mutual social circles. This coincidence make it easier to create that initial connection, and wasn’t long before they were exchanging numbers, beginning a conversation that has continued to this day…

How did you meet? Steve and I attended University of Notre Dame in our home country Cap-Haitien, Haiti in 2009 but we did not notice each other until I saw a handsome man standing in front of the college after class in February 2011. I remembered telling my good friend that Steve looks like my boyfriend without even talking to him. What I didn’t know is that my friend became friends with Steve, so it was very easy for me to get to know him. I took the initiative and asked him for his phone number and I gave him mine because I was interested. From that day, we started talking every day.
Tell us about the proposal. We were in a long-distance relationship for four years. I moved to the States in 2012 and Steve was living in Haiti. Despite the distance, we managed to see each other every other year. In May of 2016, Steve flew from Haiti to come for my June graduation and we decided to go to DC for Memorial Day weekend because we love to visit new cities. Prior to his visit, we had talked about marriage as a couple and how we wanted to take our relationship to the next level. If anyone knows Steve, they know that he cannot plan surprises. He is not good at that! I didn’t know that he bought a ring and he sent me the picture of the ring while he was in Haiti. I was unaware that he was planning to propose to me that day in DC. While we were in our hotel room, he came into the bathroom, got on one knee, and he proposed. I said yes! It was simple and sweet. When we came back to New York, we told my family and then it was official! We were engaged.
Describe your engagement session. We decided to have our photo engagement session on a boat because we both love water. I was a little bit scared about the shoot because I know Steve does not like to take pictures and if you know him, he does not like to smile a lot. The day of the shoot, I was so surprised. Steve actually enjoyed the photography session more than me. Unfortunately, I had motion sickness, so I couldn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to. Thank God for my cousin and our amazing photographer who were really patient with me. At the end, we really had a wonderful experience.
Did you have a theme? We did not really focus on a theme, we just wanted to go with the flow. I can say that because of our “wedding travel theme” it made it easier for us to choose the photography engagement session location.
What did you do on your first date? We went to the beach! It was on April 17, 2011.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple. As a couple, we love to travel together. We always make time for each other even if it’s for one weekend we go somewhere. It does not have to be outside of the States.
How has wedding planning been so far? I can say that wedding planning have been really great so far because of our wonderful planner. She kept us on track besides my parents trying to invite all of their friends.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day. Seriously, we’re both looking to have a great time with our family and friends, and getting ready for the next step of life.
