When Sondatre saw Lesley’s picture on an online dating site she stopped in her tracks. After one glimpse at the face of that beautiful woman “with a smile that could melt a tub of ice,” Sondatre was intrigued. A few brief exchanges over the phone ensued, and they decided to meet up for an official date restaurant. They talked for hours, laughing so often that they both hardly touched their food. Sadly, Sondatre was called in to work at the hospital that evening, and she had to leave their date early. But she went to work with a huge smile on her face.
After a year long whirlwind romance, both Sondatre and Lesley knew they wanted to get married. Sondatre decided she wanted to surprise Lesley with a proposal that included their closest family and friends. So she told Lesley that they would be attending a surprise party for a friend at a restaurant. Sondatre recalls, “we walked up the stairs and onto a balcony area of the restaurant where 10 of our closest friends were waiting. As we walked in everyone yelled, ‘Surprise!’…holding candles while ‘At Last,’ by Etta James ( her favorite song) played in the background. She was clueless and was still looking for the birthday girl! One of my friends handed her 24 long stem purple roses (her favorite color), and then everyone pulled out a camera or cellphone. Lesley was in shock, and I was so nervous I could barely keep from shaking as I went through my proposal spill. I pulled out a box from Jared…and only then did she realize what was really going on.”
Sondatre thought pulling off a surprise proposal was hard, but wedding planning turned out to be a bigger challenge. Lesley was on another continent, so Sondatre had to do much of the initial planning on her own. After nixing several wedding ideas, the couple worked with planner Darryl Wilson of D’Concierge Events to pull together a wedding theme celebrating Lesley’s favorite musician, Prince. Sondatre shares, “The ceremony was named Diamonds and Pearls and the reception was named The Purple Rain Affair. Our colors where Charcoal, Purple, Plum, and Ivory, which were noted in the décor as well as diamond, pearl and mirror accents to give it glam and elegance.”
Their wedding was full of the opulent glamour associated with the famous singer, but the most memorable moment was a surprise Lesley pulled together for Sondatre. Sondatre shares, “Lesley knows that I have a passion for the arts, so she surprised me with a professional dance group called Urban Soul and a local artist by the name of Miriam who performed with a 3 piece band. The dancers performed to a choreographed piece, while Miriam sang ‘Diamonds’ by Rihanna.” Sondatre and Lesley’s wedding theme of Diamonds and Pearls definitely symbolizes their love: strong, beautiful and enduring.
