For the past five years, Joelle and Frantz have always spent a weekend in the city during the summer. So it’s fitting that Frantz decided to propose on one of their romantic summer getaways. It all began when the two met at an event in the meatpacking district, with a basketball game on and question of who Joelle was rooting for. Now? They’re rooting for love.

June 10th, 2008 was one of the hottest day in New York City. I attended an afterwork party at Level V in the meatpacking district. As I walked into the venue, I spotted Frantz. I thought he was easy on the eyes but I didn’t stop to speak with him because I was hungry and sweaty. So I did I what any Brooklyn girl would have done; I went to the bathroom and reapplied my makeup. But I didn’t stop there, I went on and curbed my appetite until I was ready to hit the floor. I preceded to the bar and got a glass of wine and managed to shimmy myself right next to him. Next thing I knew, he asked in his manly voice, “So which team are you rooting for?” I responded, “Celtics, of course.” The NBA finals (Celtics vs. Lakers) was in full mode at that time. That one question opened the door to a world of laughter, joy and love.
For the past five years, Frantz and I have always spent a weekend in the city in the summer. So on Friday August 1st, we started our weekend by attending a gelato making class. I love cooking and he loves sweets so I thought it was the perfect class for us to enroll in. Earlier that week he had reached out to the gelato place to organize the big surprise. He waited until the class ended and stalled until it was just the two of us left in the kitchen. He asked, “Did you enjoy the class?” I said, “Of course, you know I enjoy being in the kitchen.” Then he said, “This is a perfect bridge, I love sweets and you love being the kitchen and this why it’s the perfect place for me to ask you to my wife.” At that point I had my hand over face, hyperventilating, and all I could see was him in his green shirt going down on one knee. And there it was, the words that I had been waiting on for the past few years. “Joelle Pierre Louis, will you be my wife?” I sandwiched his face with my hands and gave him a big kiss. He looked up at me and asked, “Is that a yes?” I replied “Of course. Yes!”
Wedding Style
My dress was a sweetheart neckline A-line dress made with embossed silk by Thea Couture from Bridal Garden. I fell in love with this place and the dress because Bridal Garden is the only not-for-profit bridal boutique in New York City, with donated designer wedding gowns discounted up to 75% off the original retail price. Most dresses are samples, overstock, and once-worn; a majority of the gowns are donated by designers, stores, and brides. Proceeds benefit education for disadvantaged children.
Culture
We incorporated our Haitian culture in our wedding by serving Haitian appetizer and sweets made by Nadege Fleurimond Catering (Haitian Caterer), signature cocktails made with Barbancourt Rhum (Haitian Rhum) and the DJs played lot of Haitian music.
Memories
Listening to the two best men give their speeches about my husband was a favorite moment of mine. They described him perfectly. He’s someone you can always count on.
Also, instead of favors, we donated to Shani E. Duplessy Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of our friend, Shani who passed away a few years ago.
Help a bride-to-be out!
Enjoy the process and take five minutes on the wedding day to enjoy the scenery and take it all in.
