In the past decade, social media has changed many people’s lives, connecting families and long lost friends with the simple click of a button. Yawa found Yaw, a childhood acquaintance, on Facebook and they began to build a friendship. Although he was in Atlanta and she lived in Chicago they were able to foster a relationship that led her moving to be with him. Months later, on her birthday, Yaw surprised his wife by overcoming his shyness and publically getting down on one knee to ask her for forever. They began their new life together in a vintage wedding last fall, the entire ceremony planned wholly by the bride; although stressful, resulted in an elegant, rustic occasion.

Where do I start? Ok… well to begin, I planned my entire wedding! Yes, it was stressful, tiring and sometimes I just wanted to give up and hire a wedding planner, but in the end I pulled it off. We wanted a rustic, vintage wedding and I was so meticulous with the little details, but I believe the beauty of the wedding depends on how much thought the bride and groom put in their details. It was hard for anyone to help me with my planning process because our theme was not one that our family and friends were familiar with (we are both Ghanaian). I wanted mason jars, burlap, lace, tree logs and branches as well as chalkboards at my wedding. For me, that screamed vintage with some elegance since we went with loud colors.
Wedding Style
I did not have any era in mind, but I knew that I wanted it to have a rustic feel to it, so I combined little details from each era and incorporated it into our wedding. I feel in love with a dress that was more than I wanted to pay, after searching around I could not find one that was comparable. Luckily, when I revisited my first dress it was on sale for more than half the cost.
Culture: Did you incorporate culture into your event? If yes, explain how, and what those elements represent.
We are both Ghanaian, so I wanted to have something that incorporated our culture into our wedding. We changed into African clothes during our reception and played lots of Ghanaian music.
What was the most memorable part of the wedding day?
From the bride- It was walking down the aisle and having our first dance
From the groom- Watching her walk down the aisle and reading my vows to her.
Tell us one thing he loves most about you…
My cheerful spirit
Tell us one thing you love most about him…
His kindness and abundant love he has for me
