Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. We met at a church banquet on June 10, 2010. When I walked in, it was like slow motion and beams of light were shining around me. From that point on, Lafayette knew that he had found his bride…
The proposal was held at Maggiano’s in Columbia. This is the my favorite restaurant. Lafayette was so sweet and was reminiscing of the journey of the relationship. I had no idea it was about to happen. It was Christmas Eve of 2014. The next month the Lafayette’s nephew was diagnosed with leukemia. He was only 5 years old. It delayed the wedding but I was right there to support him and his family through this difficult time. In the summer of 2017, his father was diagnosed with lung cancer, after we already planned to have a destination wedding. This was very troubling news for all of us. Although his dad did not make it to the wedding, he watched it on live stream and has since started treatment and is doing well.
How did you know they were “the one”? Lafayette knew right away at the youth banquet. I realized it a little later. After about 3 months of dating, he wanted to make it exclusive. He met me at Chick-fil-a and professed his undying love. At the time, I responded rather nonchalantly that I didn’t want a boyfriend right now. Frustrated, he stormed out and stated I have enough friends. He did not talk to me for 2 whole weeks. I texted and called every day greeting him and praying for him. After two weeks, he called about going on a trip to DC and I knew then that I could not live life without him!
Describe the wedding attire. The bride wore a mermaid gown from Mori Lee. It is absolutely beautiful with see through bodice. The groom wore a white sport coat and black pants.
What was wedding shopping like for you? Wedding dress shopping was amazing. I loved shopping for dresses so much that I bought three and tried on over 60. Once the destination wedding theme was decided, I already had two dresses that did not fit the theme. Therefore I needed a dress that would make me look like a mermaid princess and that is exactly what I found.
Wedding Party gifts: Bridesmaids received a personalized robe, earrings, bracelet, bouquets (made by the bride), and a large purse that could serve as a beach bag.
Favorite item on the menu: Jerk Chicken
First dance song: “Lady of my life” by Michael Jackson
What is your best memory from your wedding? The best parts of the wedding was our room being upgraded to a presidential suite, the genuine vows read, singing Tamia-Day One to my husband, and the reception where we had an authentic Jamaican wedding that was so fun the wait staff was in the middle of the dance floor!
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? The best advice that we can give to engaged couples is to enjoy being engaged to each other. Take your time deciding on the details. Decide how much the groom wants to be involved in the decision making. Engage in premarital counseling. Start developing relationships with other married couples prior to getting married. If you would like something unique and intimate then a destination is the way to go. We would do it all over again. The day was absolutely beautiful!
