Selina and Rickey’s love story began when they were recommended to each other by their respective cousins who so happened to be dating. Rickey’s cousin, who was dating Selina’s cousin, told her that Rickey was a good guy and thought she was beautiful. They first began speaking on Instagram, direct message, before exchanging numbers. Their phone conversations led to a first date over a casual dinner where Selina says they, “sat and talked for hours; it was almost as if we’d known each other prior to the first date.” From that moment on they have been inseparable ever since.

Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal. Rickey and I were introduced by each of our cousins who happened to be dating at the time. During one of our family gatherings, Rickey’s cousin pulled me to the side and told me Rickey was a “good guy” and thought I was beautiful. A few weeks passed, and I received a direct message from Rickey on Instagram. We exchanged numbers, and have been inseparable ever since!
The day of my proposal was one of THE most perfect days of my life to date. The proposal happened on my birthday, December 26th. Rickey has always gone above and beyond for any special occasion, so I knew the plans he had for my birthday would be nothing short of amazing. I am not a fan of surprises, so everyday for about two weeks I would ask him to tell me what his plans were for my birthday to see if I could get him to budge. One day in particular I remember him telling me “Can you let me surprise you for once?”, but that didn’t stop me from being inquisitive. A few days before my birthday, he gave in and told me he planned to take me to New Orleans. Around 9AM, the morning of my birthday, my friends unexpectedly arrived at my home to take me to brunch. Brunch was only the beginning of endless surprises. After brunch, I went home to prepare to spend the remainder of my day with Rickey in New Orleans (so I thought). Rickey made dinner arrangements at Ruth Chris Steak House. During dinner, our waitress visited our table every 10 minutes and placed a rose to the right of me. Since it was my birthday, I assumed the roses were an outwardly expression of Rickey’s love for me. It was truly amazing. While we sat waiting for our check, I was tapped on the shoulder by Shaun Ward, who handed me the twelfth rose and asked if he could play me a song with his violin. He began to play “All of Me” by John Legend. I was in complete awe. Followed by the song, our waitress presented me with a cake that read “Will you marry me?” When I looked up, there were my friends each with a camera recording the romantic moment. Rickey took a knee, grabbed my hand, and popped the question. In utter shock, I burst out in tears of joy and soon replied “YES!”
Describe your engagement session. Rickey has an eye for detail so most of our coordination was his idea. Our engagement session was inspired by music artists like Kanye West and Jay Z and Beyonce’s “On The Run.” Our first look was very chic. I wore a long gown and Rickey wore a suit. Those photos were captured at the Watermark Hotel located in Downtown Baton Rouge. For our second look, we dressed in all black and each wore a leather garment as our staple piece to give off edginess. First, we were opposed to outdoor photography, but our photographer, Shagari, blew us away with his idea to take the photos on the 8th floor of an empty parking garage. To our surprise, Shagari was able to provide a Harley Davidson motorcycle to be used as a prop.
What did you do on your first date? Our first date was very casual. We went to Fat Cow, a burger restaurant in Baton Rouge. We sat and talked for hours; it was almost as if we’d known each other prior to the first date.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple? Rickey loves music of all genres, so we enjoy going to concerts and music festivals. We also enjoy traveling and spending quality time together as a couple. Oh, lets not forget eating! We love to eat!
How has wedding planning been so far? Saying yes to the dress was by far the most challenging obstacle yet, but the actual planning isn’t as tough as I imagined. We don’t have a wedding planner so we’re both 100% hands on making sure our wedding day is absolutely perfect!
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day. Bride- The look on this face as he waits for me to walk down the aisle. Groom- Seeing her walk down the aisle.
