Destined from the start, Shante and Rickey’s love story began as a teenage romance blossoming from the stands of a high school football game. One of the blessings of youth is the power of emotion so close to the surface and sincerely felt as if every moment feels more alive than the next. This sincerity and depth of love will be carried with them throughout their life together, continuously strengthening an already unbreakable bond.

Wedding date: 07/15/2016

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. I met Rickey in 2005. I was 16 and Rickey was 19. We were introduced to one another at a high school football game by a mutual friend, we started dating shortly after, and we have been inseparable every since.
Our proposal story is really simple. In 2010, my mother threw Rickey and I a going away party because we were getting ready to make a huge move to Florida together. During the going away party, Rickey got down on one knee and proposed to me. He felt that it was the perfect time since we were about to move away with one another. It was definitely a big surprise!
What was wedding shopping like for you? Wedding dress shopping was actually pretty easy! I had my daughter in February 2016 so I did not have a lot of time to try on dresses. I found my dress at the second bridal shop that I went to around April 2016. I ended up getting my dress from a shop called Chic Parisian in Miami. I settled on a 10,000 Berta bridal dress. The dress was modern, sexy, sheer, very detailed, and was made with a lot of beading. It was spaghetti strap and had a deep back. The dress came with a removable train. I wore the train during the ceremony and took the train off for the reception.
Bridesmaids/Groomsmen gifts: The wedding was small, so the bride and groom decided not to have bridesmaids or groomsmen. The bride and groom requested that all of their best friends and relatives wear a certain color. The groom’s close friends wore black, and the bride’s friends and close relatives wore blush.
Favorite item on the menu: The absolute favorite item on the menu for both the bride and groom was the steak
First dance song: “Lady in my Life” by Michael Jackson
What is your best memory from your wedding? The best memory from our wedding was the surprise petal blast during our first dance! Our wedding planner set this up, and we had no idea it was going to happen! It was definitely an amazing moment.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? The best wedding advice that can be given to engaged couples would be not to sweat the small stuff and to focus on the things that are really important. Oh, and don’t forget to take a lot of pictures! Sometimes the wedding day gets really hectic and the photographer is not able to get shots with everyone included! Make sure to get pictures with everyone!
In Memoriam: The wedding was held on July 15, 2016 in honor of the bride’s late mother. The bride’s mother along with her 2 younger sisters passed away in a house fire in March of 2012. Included at the ceremony were 4 white roses in empty chairs to honor the bride’s late mother Yolanda Holmes, the bride’s late sisters MariAuna and Marniece Holmes, and the groom’s late grandmother Alberta McMillian.
