Brittni and Emanuel’s love story began after she moved into the apartment complex Emanuel was already living in. Having left his phone in a taxi the previous evening, Emanuel asked if he could use Brittni’s phone to contact the cab company. After completing the call, a they enjoyed a three hour conversation, connecting so naturally it was as if they had always known each other. Who knew the loss of a phone could lead to meeting the love of ones life…

How did you meet? Emanuel: “I met Brittni in my old apartment complex, as she was moving in, and she was looking good, so I thought this would be a great time to introduce myself. Little did I know at the time, she was moving across the hall from my apartment. About a week later I went out and left my phone in a taxi cab, and needed a phone to use to contact the taxi cab…knock knock, this was my chance to find my phone and talk to my new neighbor. Brittni and I ended up speaking for three hours that day, we both were freshly getting out of relationships and it felt great to have an amazing conversation with someone. After speaking with Brittni that day I moved and unfortunately did not speak with her again for an entire month. After returning a month later I ran into Brittni again and she allowed me to keep some items in her apartment while I went to my storage unit. After I finished moving I called Brittni on my way home and while speaking with her had felt the exact amazing feeling I had the first time we spoke, and we made plans for a first date.”
Tell us all about the proposal. Brittni: “Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday. My Father and I used to plan the menu for two weeks leading up to the actual dinner. Since he passed in 2011, I’ve made it a priority to cook every year in his honor. This year I was super excited to host both of our families for dinner in our new home. The night before was a disaster, prep-wise. I broke a glass and ended up cutting my foot, ran out of eggs and butter, and to top it all off there was a small hole in my pan that I was using for my candied yams. Somehow I managed to get everything done early and still had enough time to actually put some effort into my appearance. As our family joined hands and his sister Lisa finished blessing the food, I started turning around to explain the dishes to everyone. That’s when I saw Emanuel getting on his knee with a purple box in his hand. Once I realized what was happening I instantly broke out in a full on Kim Kardashian ugly cry. I was so emotional that I didn’t even hear him ask me to marry him. Finally I managed to squeak out a Yes! I will remember every detail of that day for the rest of our lives.”
What did you do on your first date? Although we made plans to go out salsa dancing that weekend, we wanted to see each other sooner than that so he came over one night after work for dinner. I went to culinary school and wanted to impress him with my skills in the kitchen. I settled on a thick steak, lemon scented roasted asparagus, and crispy herbed fingerling potatoes. When I asked him how he wanted his steak cooked he told me “well done” and the Chef inside of me SCREAMED! Begrudgingly, I butter roasted that ribeye until it was well done. I knew something was off because during dinner he asked for a bite of my steak which was cooked medium rare. I found out later on that he told me he liked his steak well done because he didn’t know if I could actually cook! I guess I did it right because he hasn’t missed a meal since!
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple? We love to host get-togethers, whether or not it’s with friends or family. The quality time we get to spend with our loved ones is irreplaceable, so showing them we love them and enjoy their company brings us much joy. We also enjoy watching good shows together, it can be a docu-series, a sitcom, or reality show (because we love our ratchet shows). Give us a beer, wine, a good show, and we will be on the couch for hours.
How has wedding planning been so far? Surprisingly easy. When Emanuel proposed on Thanksgiving I began planning the wedding behind the scenes via Pinterest and TheKnot.com. I promised him that we wouldn’t talk about anything wedding related until the New Year as I wanted us to just able to enjoy being engaged without all of the added stress of planning right away. We set about 3-4 major goals each month and check them off of our list. We have been on the same page about everything and it just reaffirms that we work well together.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.Emanuel: Celebrating our Love in front of our Family & Friends. Brittni: That moment when we lock eyes before I walk down the aisle.
