Accidentally stepping on someone’s foot isn’t the most graceful way to meet the love of your life, but it was the start of a beautiful relationship for Monique and Kerry.
Monique recalls, “While waiting in line [outside a club in Atlanta] talking, laughing, and not paying attention I accidentally stepped on Kerry’s shoe 2-3 times. He swears it was to get his attention, but truth be told we were too close, and I’m just clumsy lol. We exchanged numbers and met for lunch the next day before he returned home.”
Distance and time would eventually lead them to lose touch. However, when Kerry moved to Atlanta four years later, they reconnected and were able to forge a true love connection. Six years later, in 2019, Kerry proposed the on New Year’s Eve. Monique reminisces, “Right before the count down, we all decided to make a toast so I look around the room and ask what should we toast to? Kerry said lets toast to this, he pulled out the ring, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him, and of course, I said YES.”
Like many couples, Monique and Kerry were sad about having to put their wedding plans on hold due to COVID-19, but their amazing engagement session with MunaCoterie member Shagari Jackson Photography lifted their spirits. See all of their gorgeous engagement photos below.

Tell us how you met.
We met July 2009 in Atlanta, we were in line waiting to get inside a night club at Underground Atlanta. I (Monique) was out celebrating my sister’s birthday and Kerry was in town visiting from New Orleans for the weekend with friends. While waiting in line talking, laughing, and not paying attention I accidentally stepped on Kerry’s shoe 2-3 times. He swears it was to get his attention, but truth be told we were too close, and I’m just clumsy lol. We exchanged numbers and met for lunch the next day before he returned home. We kept in touch and visited each other for a few months, but life pulled us in two different directions so we went our separate ways. We reconnected in 2013 when Kerry reached out to tell me he was moving to Atlanta and the rest is history.
What did you do on your first date?
On our first official date we went out to eat, and we went to a show Kerry was performing at after.
How did he propose?
We got engaged on New Years’ Eve 12/31/19, we decided at the very last second to have a New Year’s Eve party at our home. Funny thing is that gathering almost didn’t happen. I was totally against it as we had the family over all day for Christmas and I was still recovering from that cleanup. However, Kerry was so insistent on having this party so I finally just gave in. Right before the count down, we all decided to make a toast so I look around the room and ask what should we toast to? Kerry said lets toast to this, he pulled out the ring, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him, and of course, I said YES.
Describe your engagement session
Our engagement session was amazing. After having to postpone all our plans due to the pandemic, we really were not in the wedding planning mood anymore. We lost all excitement in not knowing how things would turn out BUT let me just say Shagari got us right together and he didn’t even know it. From the studio to our looks everything just came together so well. We were beyond pleased with the entire experience.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
Our favorite thing to do as a couple, we would both agree that it would be a tie between eating out and traveling.
How has wedding planning been so far?
Now that we are back to wedding planning things have been pretty smooth so far. It did get a little stressful and we took a 6-month break in planning due to the current state of the world but we recently started getting things rolling and so far so good. We hope it stays this way and we get to have our day just as we originally wanted with no restrictions, but if not it will still be amazing.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.
On our wedding day we really just look forward to officially becoming husband and wife and having a great day with all of our family and friends filled with love, laughter, plenty of dancing, and amazing food.
