This sultry ‘American Gangster’ inspired engagement session in the Outer Banks features a beautiful sunset, a historic lighthouse, and modern-meets-classic fashion, creating a romantic and timeless feel.
Ebonie and Devin first met on Bumble five years ago. During their first date, they went to a basketball game but ended up paying more attention to each other and talking the night away. Devin surprised Ebonie by proposing during their first professional photo shoot.
Being from the DC metro area, Ebonie and Devin wanted to return to the Outer Banks for their engagement shoot, as they had spent quality time escaping to the peaceful shores during the uncertainty of 2020. The peace and happiness they felt, along with their love for one another, were beautifully captured by Matt Lusk Photography.
Ebonie and Devin can hardly wait to celebrate their love with family and friends at their summer wedding in 2022!

How did you meet?
Ebonie and Devin are a Bumble success story, who matched on the app 5 years ago.
Tell us all about the proposal
A few weeks after Ebonie’s birthday, she asked Devin if they could do a photoshoot. They had never done a professional photo shoot, so Ebonie was excited about having the chance to get all dolled up with Devin. She should have known that something was up when Devin quickly agreed and offered to plan the shoot.
The week of the shoot comes and everything from wardrobe delays to hair appointment malfunctions happened to Ebonie. This made her pretty pessimistic, even telling her mom that if anything else went wrong she was going to cancel the whole thing.
The day of the proposal…
The morning arrives and Devin has everything ready to go. After Ebonie’s makeup was done they headed out the door to get to the location. They finally went into the studio and after a few touchups, they began the photoshoot. Devin wanted to play a reaction game so that the couple could get a few candid shots during the game. Each of them thought of funny words to spell out on a scrabble board, while the other hid behind the backdrop. Once they returned in front of the camera, the other would reveal the word on the board and the photographer would snap the initial reaction.
Ebonie was keeping track of time, and in an effort to not have Devin get charged more she called for the final round. Once Devin was finally ready, he revealed his final scrabble board which said, “will you marry me”. The photographer was right there to capture the moment! Overcome with joy, and shock from her beautiful new ring, Ebonie reminded Devin that they needed to get out of the studio before they got kicked out!
Devin recounts, “She was rushing us to get out, but little did she know I had more surprises in store. I told her to leave her stuff there and the photographer [a close friend of mine] would grab it all, and I took her outside to take pictures near the water.”
Ebonie had just dried her eyes and fixed her make-up when she noticed a small crowd of oddly familiar silhouettes approaching. As they inched closer the faces became more clear, all of their closest friends and family were there waiting for the newly engaged couple.
Ebonie shares, “It felt like a dream, I never would have thought he would plan something so perfectly. To get my family back in town and friends to fly in just for that moment…unforgettable.”
When did you know they were “the one”?
I knew he was the one on July 4th, 2017. For the months leading up, I constantly told him how much I adore fireworks for any occasion. We had missed the local fireworks show the weekend prior and I was bummed. Devin noticed fireworks in the distance so we hopped in his car and literally followed the fireworks so that I could catch a glimpse of the sparkling lights that always put a smile on my face. It was in that moment I knew that I loved him and wanted to be with him forever.”
Describe your engagement session.
The original plan was to do a Black Friday engagement shoot inspired by Devin’s favorite movie, American Gangster. At 4 a.m. we received a text from our photographer that he was dealing with a serious family emergency. We didn’t want him worrying about us, so we started looking into the top-rated local photographers since we were on the Outer Banks for Thanksgiving. We got in touch with Matt Lusk Photography and he was incredible, fitting us in the following day for an engagement shoot. He was familiar with the local spots and the beautiful natural lighting in OBX. He helped us bring so much more to life than we had originally planned.
What did you do on your first date?
We tried to find a location between us and ended up going to Bar Louie to watch the Golden State Warriors take down the Oklahoma City Thunder. We actually spent most of the time not paying any attention to the game and really talking to get to know each other.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
Devin shares, “Our favorite thing to do as a couple is going to sporting events. Pre-covid you could always find us at a Wizards game or traveling the world to see some of our other favorite sports teams.”
How has the wedding planning process been?
According to Ebonie, “wedding planning has not been like the movies, but now that we have accomplished most of the big decisions we are hoping the process will smooth out. Devin says I’m ‘all gas and no breaks when it comes to all of the details, so I’m trying to slow down and so we can enjoy the process more.”
What are you looking forward to most on your wedding day?
We are both really looking forward to our reception entrance. We can’t say too much, but we are hoping to make it a memorable one!
