It was an evening of dinner and roller skating followed by a conversation that never wanted to end. Realizing that they both found in each other a soulmate, it wouldn’t be long before the ultimate question was ready to be asked…

Tell us how you met. We met at a country club. So if anyone says we met in “the club,” technically, they are right and wrong. More specifically, we met on the dance floor. He was staring at me from across the room with the biggest smile on his face. He looked so happy. He then boldly approached me…and the rest is history!

The Proposal. Our proposal was intimate and very reflective of the strongest tie that binds us – our spirituality. He asked me to join him in prayer. When I rose from our prayer. He was on one knee, confessed his love for me, and then asked me to be his wife.

What did you do on your first date? After getting to know each other for a few weeks by phone, we went on our first date. He was a true gentleman. He picked me up with yellow roses in hand. From there we went roller skating (my favorite pastime) then ate dinner at my favorite sushi restaurant, and concluded the date by sitting in the car for an hour-or-so talking about everything from politics to music. The date lasted at least 8 hours. We both couldn’t believe how much time passed!

Favorite thing(s) to do as a couple? One of our favorite things to do as a couple is to listen to instrumentals and freestyle. He brings the East Coast vibe and I bring the West Coast vibe. In addition to freestyling, we also love to be adventurous and try new things. California has so much to offer, so we love to explore new hiking paths, create good healthy meals, go dancing, and workout together.

Describe your engagement session. Our engagement session was a memorable adventure. Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend are such breathtaking sites, and to be there for the first time, with each other, surrounded by the history of the Native Indians, is something we both valued and cherished. Not to mention our lovely husband and wife photographers who were just as fun and adventurous as us. They immediately lightened the mood by dancing and laughing with us, pushing us to get closer to cliffs to get the perfect shot and stopping the shoot to allow tourists to greet us and wish us well on our journey to marriage.

How did you know they were “the one”? He knew I was the one because he felt I was his spiritual soulmate. I knew he was the one when I met his parents. There was something about the way his mom and father embraced me that really sealed the deal.

How has wedding planning been so far? Because I am a creative at heart, I am planning every detail of our wedding. Therefore, wedding planning has been intense, yet fun and adventurous (similar to our relationship). It has tested our ability to comprise and has truly enhanced our patience towards one another.

What are you looking forward to most on the wedding day? We are looking forward to honoring our African, Caribbean, and African American roots with the family and friends that have taught us how to love and have prayed for our union.
