This year’s Met Gala had to be hands down one of the best ever with garden-inspired looks stealing the show as designers took their inspiration from J.G Ballard’s short story, The Garden of Time.
Metallics, explosive florals, along with land, sea, and sky-themed creations floated up the now iconic Met staircase on 5th Avenue into a dazzling gala, all in the hopes of bringing much-needed awareness and money to the work of the Costume Institute at The Met.
As explained on the museum’s website: “The exhibition will breathe new life into these storied objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the smells, sounds, textures, and motions of garments that can no longer directly interact with the body.”
Chosen by organizers to be the inspiration behind the much-anticipated fete, J.G Ballard’s dystopian tale gives us a glimpse into the sartorial choices of the main characters and of the selections seen on the green carpet especially Count Axel who in the account is described as, “A tall, imperious figure in a black velvet jacket, a gold tie-pin glinting below his George V beard, cane held stiffly in a white-gloved hand, he surveyed the exquisite crystal flowers without emotion.”
In case you missed it, here are some of the best looks from the night!
Walking through the Garden of Time…
These celebs and their glam squads brushed up on their JG Ballard because the looks brought Count Axel and his wife as if it was a Netflix film. From Tyla giving us the sands of time in a molded fabric cast with micro-crystals, to John Galliano having a ball with the top looks of the night with offerings from his time at Maison Margiela and Givenchy, the words leaped off of the pages and onto fabric with these exhibition worthy pieces.

Crystals & Metallics…
Dazzling hardware made its red-carpet presence felt once again with metallics and blazing crystals being the talk of the night. The handmade gown from Schiaparelli for Jennifer Lopez took artisans 800 hours to complete and wrapped the multi-hyphenate star in literally millions of silver foul bugles and beads. Details like Swarovski crystals, materials like aluminum, and 3-D embroidery made these looks some of the most glamorous of the event.

Blooming florals…
The floral force was strong with these looks with Nicki Minaj making an appearance under the white tent wearing a mini floral dress with colorful 3D florals by Marni. More floral pops came with Erykah Badu’s look who stayed loyal to her recognizable aesthetic.

Blue came to win…
Lea Michele’s Van Gogh-inspired gown by Rodarte was draped in a cotton candy-colored cloud of matching tulle and Rachel Zegler had her own arm candy with her oversized dramatic shawl. While other pastels were definitely setting the tone with the garden-themed night, the prettiest candy blue shades came and left the girlies feeling like they were Cinderella for just one night.

Menswear…
Wait? Was it The Met Gala or Haute Couture Week in Paris because the men took the looks to another level this year?! There were abstract deconstructed looks, hand appliquéd embroideries of birds and flowers, and celebs like Jon Batiste who went with a traditional yet modern look with a custom midnight blue wool barathea single-breasted evening jacket with a peak lapel by British luxury house Dunhill.

Fantastical frocks…
There was just something about these surrealist looks that transported us from 5th Avenue into a whimsical dream world that we didn’t want to leave. These wow-worthy looks featured kinetic fashion, a bugle-beaded spider-webbed cage of over 10,000 hand-beaded crystals, 3d printed textures, custom molded casts, exquisite pleating, and more.
