We love an outspoken woman, who is as talented as she is inspirational. Eartha Kitt exemplified all of these qualities. A singer, actress and dancer, Eartha Kitt was an original triple threat. She began her career as a member of the Katherine Dunham Company in 1943, and her dance skills helped her become a world renown cabaret star. In addition to dancing, Kitt was known for her unique singing voice. She sang songs in seven different languages, and her most recognizable hit, “Santa Baby,” still gets regular airplay during the Holiday season. Ms. Kitt is also well known for her acting, most notably for her captivating and sexy portrayal of the role of Catwoman in the final season of the 1960s Batman TV series. No one has a better cat purr than Ms. Kitt.
Her phenomenal talent is not the only reason we are obsessed with her; Kitt was active in many social causes. She was an outspoken advocate for equal rights during the civil rights movement. In 1966, she established the Kittsville Youth Foundation, a chartered and non-profit organization for underprivileged youth in the Watts area of Los Angeles. She was also an open critic of the Vietnam War, and an outspoken advocate for LGBT rights and same sex marriage.
In the 1990s and 2000s Ms. Kitt continued to star in numerous movies, plays and TV shows. She only slowed down when she was diagnosed with cancer. On Christmas Day 2008, Kitt died from colon cancer at her home. Today we honor Ms. Kitt’s phenomenal talent and style, as we take a look at how you can capture the essence of her glamour, sexiness and class on your wedding day.
Ms. Kitt’s Wedding
Ms. Kitt married real estate investor, John William McDonald, in 1960 and they had one child, daughter Kitt McDonald, born November 26, 1961. However, the couple divorced in 1965, and Kitt never remarried. Ms. Kitt looked very demure and classy in her tea length wedding dress. This shorter style dress was very popular in the 1950s and 60s. If you want to recreate this vintage look on your wedding day, peruse the dresses of Tobi Hannah and Dolly Couture.
The Mermaid
Ms. Eitt is the epitome of femininity in this curve hugging mermaid dress. If you are ready to show your curves on your wedding day, try these styles from Ines di Santo, Lazaro, Jim Hjelm, and Sherri Hill.
Show those Legs
Ms. Kitt never shied away from showing her gorgeously toned, dancers legs. If you want to represent in true Eartha style wear a wedding dress with a silt that will put your gams front and center. Here are styles that we love from Maggie Sottero, Reem Acra, Manuel Mota for Pronovias, Ines di Santo, and Hayley Paige.
Catwoman
Who doesn’t want to be Catwoman! Ms. Kitt owned this role, purr and all. If you want to channel a little Catwoman for your wedding, why not wear a black wedding dress and compliment it with gold accessories. You can save the actual catsuit for after the wedding : ). We love these looks from Mori Lee, Vera Wang, and Wtoo Brides, and Enozani.
Ms. Eartha Kitt is the personification of a woman who knows how to be sexy yet classy. Let us know which one of Ms. Kitt’s looks you would rock on your wedding day!
