With enchanting vocals and lyrics, soft feminine moves, and runway worthy outfits the Supremes captured the hearts of the world. The Supremes were originally founded as the Primettes in Detroit, Michigan in 1959. The founding members, Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross and Betty McGlown all grew up in the Brewster-Douglas public housing project. In 1961, the Primettes would sign with Motown Records. They lost their fourth member and Ross, Ballard and Wilson carried on as the trio we now know as the Supremes.
The Supremes would go on to become one of the most commercially successful vocal groups in American history, with 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Diana Ross was the lead vocalist, and in 1967 Berry Gordy, Motown’s president, renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes. Diana Ross would go on to have an illustrious career. However, after several lineup changes, including the departure and untimely death of founding member Florence Ballard, the Supremes eventually disbanded in 1977.
