Will and Jada are one of our favorite Hollywood power couples. It is not easy to be married for over a decade, but the Smith’s have kept their marriage strong in the face of constant rumors and criticisms about their marriage and their parenting style. Will turned a successful career as a rapper, into an amazing acting career which has included several block buster movies and an Oscar nomination. Jada’s many hats include being a author, singer-songwriter, philanthropist, and successful businesswoman. She actively protests against human trafficking and she is currently working with activist Angela Davis to promote the documentary, “Free Angela and All Political Prisoners.” The couple also created Overbrook Entertainment, which has produced many of the Smith’s films, including Karate Kid, featuring their son, Jaden Smith, and they founded the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation to benefit inner-city community and family development. Read on to see how this talented couple met!
How They Met
Will and Jada first met in 1990 when she auditioned for the role of Smith’s girlfriend on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” show. She was only 19, and she was turned down because she was considered to be too short for the part. However, they became friends. In an interview, Jada stated, “After we had known each other for many years, we went out for dinner one night with mutual friends and I saw that he had grown from this lanky kid to this really responsible man. We started courting each other and our friendship turned into romance.” Their first date in 1995 was in Mexico. Will said that Jada didn’t think he was funny when they first met. In an interview, Will stated, “We were together for two years before she even laughed at something I said! She thinks I’m hilarious now, it just took her some time to work into it, but we connected intellectually … We connected intellectually and worked into the comedic side.” Will proposed to Jada in November 2007 with a $250,000 engagement ring.
Their Wedding/Marriage
Will and Jada were married on December 31, 1997. Will was 29 and Jada was 26. This was Will’s second marriage. He was previously married to Sheree Zampino, in 1992 and they have one son Willard Christopher Smith III, also known as “Trey.” Will and Jada’s secret New Year’s Eve wedding was held in Baltimore at the medieval mansion Cloisters. About 100 guests attended their wedding, and no one knew that Jada was two months pregnant. In July the following year, the couple had their first child together, Jaden and in 2000 they celebrated the birth of Willow.
Will and Jada’s marriage has been plagued by rumors of divorce and of infidelity. Jada recently addressed a rampant rumor that she and Will have an open relationship. In April 2013, during an interview with HuffPost Live, Jada stated, “No, I think that people get that idea because Will and I are very relaxed with one another. But I’ve always told Will: You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be OK.” Later Jada took to Facebook to clarify her statement saying, “Here is how I will change my statement…Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship…this means we have a GROWN one.” In a recent interview with Redbook Magazine, Jada stressed that their 15 year marriage is still going strong. She revealed, “What is the thing that Will could do to make me not love him? That would make me abandon him? I can’t think of one. I’m sorry. Except if he did something bad to the kids—now we’ve got a problem.”
Jada revealed that cherishing everyday moments helps them keep their marriage together, she shared this with Redbook, “Picking Willow up from her girlfriend’s house at 9:30 p.m., and enjoying that ride together, then stopping at 7-Eleven to get some ice cream as a family.” In an interview with People Magazine, Will agreed saying “We make the effort to always put the family first. Being there for each other and being present with our kids is the most important thing. I take being a parent very seriously.”
Timeless Words of Love
Jada says this about Will, “I don’t think I’d be the woman I am today without [Will’s] love and vision. We’ve created love, we’ve created a family, and we create power and unity.” In 2007, Jada told the press, “The most important aspect of our relationship is that we continue to grow together—you have to be willing to take journeys with your partner. And even our relationship has gone through bad times. But if you can survive them, you’ll have an even deeper connection.” In an interview Will stated, “I found balance when I met Jada. In order to have a good relationship, you’ve got to give yourself. There’s so much beauty in having that vulnerability.” This couple is the prefect mixture of talent, love and social consciousness. We are excited to see how they will continue to work together to give us great entertainment, while having a positive impact on the world.
Jada’s Wedding Look
We love the above pictures that Jada posted to Instagram that give us another look at her unique, high neck wedding dress. She wore a champagne colored silk and velvet gown by Badgley Mischka. Designers are bringing the high neck wedding dresses back. The 2013 and 2014 Pronovias collections featured below give the high neck dress a modern update by making them sleeveless. Our last high neck gown Bittersweet by Joseph is accented with a peplum. These dresses are proving that modesty is the new sexy in current wedding fashion.
