Anyone who has experienced a Nigerian wedding knows that our weddings are always filled an abundance of…everything.  Lots of music, lots of color, lots of guests, and lots of culture.  Abisola and Akinyemi’s luxurious, red-themed wedding was all of the above, with additional doses of romance and style.  We love Abisola’s Old Hollywood glamour updo and her classic red bridesmaids dresses.  And the shoes…gotta love the shoes!  The images were brilliantly captured by Izehi Photography.  Find out more about how these two love birds met…

The First Encounter…

“When I first arrived at college in Abilene, TX, Akin was one of the first people I met. While having lunch at the school cafeteria, I caught Akin staring at me a few times and saying things to try to get my attention. Akin got all of our phone numbers so that he coud get us more involved in the African Student’s Association (yeah right!), which I later found out did not even exist at our school!  After some small talk later that evening, he admitted to being interested in having only my number and not others. I thought this was a cute, but rather cunning way of trying to get to know me so I took my time in letting him get close.  After a while he broke down my defenses with his sense of humor and his caring ways.  Over the years we grew closer, and even when Akin moved away for work we continued to date and make the long trips back and forth between Abilene and Dallas. Akin has always been a person who understands me and I trust him with my all.”

The Proposal…

“When he proposed, I really hope he didn’t think it was going to be a surprise!!! First of all, he had made reservations at an elegant restaurant we both always wanted to visit but never did. Then he told me he was going to wear a formal suit for the dinner because the restaurant was “real formal” and having known him for several years, I knew he only wears suit for extremely special occasions. As we overlooked the Dallas sunset for dinner, Akin took my hands, got on his knee and asked me to be his wife in front of the whole restaurant. I was so shy that I said “YES” so that he could get off of his knee even though he felt he had been there all night. I am so excited about our future together and I know that we will be happy forever. I love you baby and I love us!!!”

Mazal Tov to you both! I linked here from an article on Huffington. My first thought was, “A financial analyst and a cpa? That sounds like a bad joke about boring couples…” Instead you guys are full of heart and energy, and clearly excited by the world and each other- the kind of couple that adds love and energy to the world. Here’s to being married being way more awesome than the wedding. Congrats!

  13. Anna says:

I am proud to know you as my fellow Nigerian Americans. I would love to have you my neighbors, I would be honored to have you at my Church, and I would be happy if our kids could become best friends. I hope your path is cleared of those who call themselves human and who are merely evil spirits in human form. Health and happiness, be part of the new America, whose spirit itself needs to be constantly renewed, and can only be renewed by those who keep coming here from abroad, as it always was, and as it always will be.
